Picard had been in Starfleet for over 75 years at that point. He didn't know how to function without Starfleet.

He still doesn't, to be honest - his first instinct was to go to Starfleet Command and ask for a ship from them, and he decided he liked Rios because he acted like a Starfleet officer.

I think the last bit is backwards. He susses Rios out immediately as someone playing at Han Solo but is really just acting out because they are bitter at something Starfleet has done.

It's left unconfirmed whether Rios actually was in Starfleet previously, but that he probably was, right?

That seems like something which could be simply confirmed with a search in a database, though. I wasn't paying 100% attention to the last episode, but I remember something being said about Starfleet in one of his scenes again.

He said it, he served as number one on a heavy cruiser but then stuff happened his captain was brutally murdered and he resigned.

It does two things I hate, give pointless busy work to characters they don't know what to do with and undercut the central plot tension - the entire premise is the rebellion is basically facing a siege, their fuel is running out and they're slowing getting picked off. When characters can just leave and return at will it completely deflates this. See also, Sarek and Amanda turning up at the end of Disco season 2.

Plus they achieve gently caress all in the sequence, and events outside their control just carry them along. Throw in some heavy handed messaging about the ruling elite that doesn't end up having any bearing on the plot and call it a day. But hey, at least releasing a bunch of donkeys made it all worth while (while off screen they're easily rounded up and returned to their pens).

I thought The Royale was a better throwback to TOS than any of the season 1 attempts. It had that Twilight Zone, existential horror reveal that an attempt at kindness by the alien intelligence unwittingly created a nightmarish prison for its occupant.

But it's not one I go back to rewatch, but that may also be because the episode must have played on TV more often than any other when I was a kid, the amount of times I must have seen that one...

Wow way to miss the CENTRAL THEME OF THE FILM.

The whole thing was pointless and the heroes' accomplishments were nullified offscreen. That's the thesis of the sequel trilogy.

Better things aren't possible.

It's an important theme in Picard too now that you mention it.

These are all superficial and largely aesthetic similarities. And if you take this approach, literally everything is fantasy genre if you're reductive enough.

What do you think the differences between fantasy and sci-fi genre actually are? Here's a hint, actual scientific accuracy is not required.

I don't agree with that poster, I think this show is predominantly in the realm of sci-fi. But I also don't think the correct response is "but Star Trek has always been fantasy" when that's just not the case. It's a weak defence. The majority of it has been speculative fiction about societal progress reacting to advances in fictional technology and contact with fictional alien life.

There is absolutely some genre overlap in old Star Trek (most notably the Sisko plot line in DS9 season 7), and there's definitely overlap in new Trek (prophecy, fate revealing crystals, etc...)

Identifying this overlap isn't inherently critical, even if that poster personally sees it as such.

those are the episodes i probably re-watch the most out of any of them.

never seen a show try to do this, really. twilight zone in space, yeah, but creepier. a lot of twilight zone episodes are actually pretty bland or light.

Yeah if anything people care way too much about what the Federation is up to. Shoulda kept TOS about it and changed the name and history every mention. The Confederation of Worlds, Earth Probe and Shuttle Co., Terran Saucer Fleet. Conquered Vulcan, conquered by Tellar, it's just Earth, there's a million colonies, we've reached other galaxies, we can't leave this one, Earth blew up.

Lol.

JJ really took a poo poo on what Johnson was going for.

I liked bitter Luke, I thought the the Ren/Rey dynamic in the middle was the best stuff to come out of the franchise in 30 years. But the most frustrating thing about TLJ is that it came so close but then walked back nearly every point it was trying to make. He gave the film's metatextual thesis to the antagonist which the hero rejects and everything plays out as usual. They couldn't even burn the jedi sacred texts without a shot to reassure us they're safe and sound on the millennium falcon.

It's full of questionable choices and I don't have much faith in Trevorrow at all based on his past work, but it did have the advantage of actually telling a story.

Certainly better than what we got, but still hindered by the hole TLJ wrote itself into - the only way I could see them getting out of it isn't the kind of film Disney are prepared to make.

Luke haunting Ren as a call back to "see you around, kid" was probably my favourite bit.

Episodes 7-9 are all dogshit. I'd rather watch Attack of the Clones than any of them.

Episode 7 is a thinly disguised retelling of A New Hope. Episode 8 is a complete mess. Whatever Rian Johnson wanted to say or wanted to make, he hosed up. Episode 9 is just insulting, but it's also the logical conclusion to what was introduced in Episode 7. There's nothing new, just more and flashier and remember Chewbacca, you liked that character right? Come give us money you animals.

Real enlightening that people who like Picard are trying to defend the star wars sequel trilogy as well. Out of reflex apparently, because there are THREE OTHER THREADS for that kind of pointless self-soothing.
