Been reading the recaps for the older seasons at work during downtime lately and the number of times I've thought/blurted out "THAT was in Season (single digit)??" kind of surprises me. Like, I was legit surprised the Mary Poppins Sherry Bobbins one was in Season 8.

I feel like the hate that Principal and the Pauper gets should go towards Sherry Bobbins. It's a crummy episode. It really feels like something from maybe season 12.

Shary Bobbins was great, but in a one-off, let’s never speak of this again kind of way.

Then it seems like the show thought that was the formula they were supposed to follow forever more

I said it earlier in the thread, but there was a Sideshow Bob episode about genetically modified organisms and how Bob modified himself to have gills to breathe underwater and grasshopper legs to jump high and poo poo. People didn’t believe it was a real episode description, but it was. Pretty sure that episode is also bare minimum five years old by now, if not ten years old.

Also, let’s not forget VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA VENDETTA!!!!!!

Sideshow Bob has sucked fat pimply rear end for years now.

The Simpsons comics seem to have been a drat sight better than the show for years. Definitely more creative.

"Buy me a Beer," is legit one of my favorite Simpsons songs. The episode has a lot of good jokes, but they're all sort of parodying the same thing which is very different for a Simpsons episode of that time.

My wife wanted to see tonight's episode because she likes John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. Their appearance was sandwiched between breaking the Sea Captain and :pcgaming:STEM SCHOOLS :pcgaming: Zach Woods was there, too, being Zach Woods.

A lot of the good Simpsons parodies theme to have a theme in that they have exactly one major influence, which they may not expect the audience to have heard of, and stick to it.

Reminds me of the episode with the Count of Monte Cristo riff, and they simplify the plot with, among other things, having Homer accused of British sympathies (since explaining 19th century French politics would be way too much effort) that gets him sent off to prison. Maybe coincidentally, this actually more resembles the real-life case that the novel was inspired by.

Just rewatched The Telltale Head, it was fine, the only laugh out loud moment for me was Moe bursting into tears when Barney asked for beer with a head on it but there were plenty of decent gags.
Funnily enough, the town next to mine had a statue of a famous comedian synonymous with the place (Eric Morecambe) chopped off at the ankle and a look back at Facebook reveals people stood around the scene of the crime looking sad and calls for the perpetrator to have his foot sawn off just like Grampa and Jasper.

In the new one, it turns out the sea captain has been secretly working for 40 years to find treasure off a map he and his wife stole from the nazis. He's completely wasted both their lives doing it, but he finally finds it, only to have the mayor and police show up to confiscate it, claiming the town incorporated those waters the night before based on a tip from his wife.

They have a town meeting to figure out how to spend the money. Marge convinces them to spend it on STEM education with a song by John Legend. Also Chrissy Tiegan is here.

:siren:Bart sounds a little off now:siren:

The new fancy school gamifies education in a way Bart likes but Lisa discovers the games are teaching the dumb kids how to do lovely gig jobs (buying groceries for other people, charging scooters, driving uber).

Lisa objects that the algorithm is teaching those kids the task rabbit jobs of today, and it doesn't know what the jobs of the future are. The principal looks into it, and finds out the school's algorithm thinks the only job of the future is elder care. The kids find out and reduce the school's rating down to the point that it self destructs.

At a career day, the principal tells Homer his job will be obsolete soon, leading Homer to revolt against automation. He goes on a John Henry challenge to pour more soda than the new Buzz mix machine they installed at work.

His parents showed up in a recent episode and they weren't in their 90s so I'm guessing it got retconned.

ELECTRONIC OLD MEN RUNNING THE WORLD
I found an updated version of the Simpsons episode IMDB ratings chart posted upthread.

I rewatched Life on the Fast Lane yesterday (S1E8) and it's decent. I'd rate it higher than The Call of the Simpsons, Moaning Lisa or Bart the Genius so definitely better than the chart rates it. It has a pretty gag-filled first half and Jacques is a good character, it also has a plot that deals with adult fear (marriage breakdown) while managing to not be as melodramatic as Homer's Odyssey, where (and this bears repeating) Homer tries to kill himself.

I didn't realise until I read the wiki entry that Barney Gumble was meant to own Barney's Bowlarama until the writers realised that there's no way Barney could own anything.

Barney having an easygoing job and employed by his father would explain a lot. Was the Bowlarama the same setting of every bowling episode?

Though I forget that And Maggie Makes Three is a flashback episode. (If a relatively recent one, given Maggie is around one year old generally)

If they're going to be riffing comic book movies they could at least be using Radioactive Man. (Though the Fossil Fuel Four might be the peak there)

The comics had some Radioactive Man 'issues' spoofing various eras of comic books.
