Chandler is very much treated like some sort of victim because he was raised by a loving father who was transitioning.

Was there any comedy in the 90s that didn't treat trans issues as a joke?

It seems like that was very much the passing point between "ignore trans people entirely because we're supposed to pretend that nobody knows what that is" and "trans people exist lol", same as for 60s/70s comedy and gay men.

My memory's hazy but I vaguely remember Just Shoot Me having an episode where David Spade found out one of his old friends had transitioned.

There probably were a lot of poo poo jokes in there but IIRC the end result was that he accepted her and they stayed friends (but she was never seen again).

As Jake in Brooklyn 99 says

"Hestus: Actually, you know what? That's a high school graduation ring. Dan Marino High, class of 2003.
Jake: Marino High, home of the Dolphins, I suspect.
Hestus: Nope, Pet Detectives. Town was really into Marino's cameo in Ace Ventura.
Jake: Ah, it stands to reason. Classic film, one of my childhood favorites. And it only gets overtly transphobic at the very end, so a win.

I think that was more an attempt to be positive about gay culture more than trans people. Like in your 70s comedy you definitely couldn't even say the G-word, so you got a lot of high camp "oooh let me measure your inside leg" characters where the 'joke' is that the audience at home is saying "haha that man's a poofter" but their sexuality would never be acknowledged.

By the 90s you had some tentative moves towards "not that there's anything wrong with that" gay acceptance, but most people didn't know anything about gay people other than "I heard they have sex in the butt", which is not ideal for pitching to a network, so they went looking for various scenes.

You're probably right that most of the audience didn't know the difference between a trans person and a cross-dresser, but I think the angle was more about slightly less one dimensional gay characters.

"Capitalism is a precondition for freedom to flourish." is a weird one, because in Marxist analysis, yes it is, it goes in between feudalism and socialism, but in anarchist theory it doesn't make much sense as a question.
