Chandler is very much treated like some sort of victim because he was raised by a loving father who was transitioning.

Was there any comedy in the 90s that didn't treat trans issues as a joke? It seems like that was very much the passing point between "ignore trans people entirely because we're supposed to pretend that nobody knows what that is" and "trans people exist lol", same as for 60s/70s comedy and gay men.

My memory's hazy but I vaguely remember Just Shoot Me having an episode where David Spade found out one of his old friends had transitioned. There probably were a lot of poo poo jokes in there but IIRC the end result was that he accepted her and they stayed friends (but she was never seen again).

Angepain posted:i think there was the occasional positive portrayal of drag queens around which y'know, to 90s audiences were exactly the same as being one of those transgenders so that might count By the 90s you had some tentative moves towards "not that there's anything wrong with that" gay acceptance, but most people didn't know anything about gay people other than "I heard they have sex in the butt", which is not ideal for pitching to a network, so they went looking for various scenes. You're probably right that most of the audience didn't know the difference between a trans person and a cross-dresser, but I think the angle was more about slightly less one dimensional gay characters. Oh well you're somewhat communist I guess. "Capitalism is a precondition for freedom to flourish." is a weird one, because in Marxist analysis, yes it is, it goes in between feudalism and socialism, but in anarchist theory it doesn't make much sense as a question.
