Eh. Depends on a lot of things whether it'll be overinflated or not. If it's in what is now a prime location for real estate, it won't attract higher golf membership prices because of that but it does make the land more valuable, for example.

A developer has offered £30m and seems to think they can make money on that.

Just saying, the land is currently classed as "for recreational use" but only about 5% of people play golf. It's not really fulfilling that designation like it would be if it were a park.

There are plenty other difficulties with moving abroad, but I think people overestimate the language barrier. Basically any large city in Central or Northern Europe is going to be completely fine to live in speaking only English. Plenty of other places too tbh - to pick an example at random young Latvians likely speak better English than most French or Germans cos no other fucker speaks Latvian and you're probably going to want to move abroad for education or work at some point. Same for Czechs, Hungarians, Greeks, and a lot of the other less populous countries. Rural areas with older populations might have fewer English speakers, but that's not where the jobs are anyway. Those dreaded Eastern Europeans you've heard so much about going places and taking jobs manage just fine, a native English speaker if anything has it far easier.

I get your point, from when I've been on holiday to Latvia, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Czechia... they have all spoken English and you could probably get by living there.

That said, both my wife and I work in technical fields which have specific technical language which is always more of a problem when it comes to learning new languages and for natives (even those who are good English speakers) knowing the words in English. It's not like, an absolute solid barrier but it does make things a little more difficult.

Sometimes it's good to get taught the technical terms/slang for things in multiple languages, just in case one of them becomes a slur and you can more easily avoid it.

Ash may be disagreeable but there's certainly good reasons to be that way in the current situation, and the logic is solid.

I've seen very few arguments that independence would turn Scotland into a socialist wonderland.

Scottish independence is, to a very large degree, about getting the hell away from English nationalism, especially now.

The Tories will absolutely do everything in their power to erase devolved powers and try to make Scottish independence into an impossible idea.

And where you can argue that Scottish independence isn't consistent with the overall goal of international socialism, none of you have put forward an argument that explains on how the Scots passing up their chance of independence helps anyone but the Tories in any way, shape or form. If they do it under a Labour government, then sure, that's less true, but I don't think they can afford to wait that long.

Nobody can afford to wait for Labour to save the day.

loving gently caress me forever: Wages back above pre-economic crisis levels

Just 13 loving years later. Lost decade, what's that?

Oh but it's a cause for celebration. Sure.

quote:

Average weekly wages in the UK have reached their highest levels since before the financial crisis.

Weekly pay reached £512 in the three months to December, which - adjusting for inflation - is the highest since March 2008.

At least the "expert" analyst points it out:

quote:

It's always good to have some cheerful news to report, such as the news that wages, after stripping out the effect of inflation, have finally squeaked above their level in March 2008. In other words, your wage can finally buy a little bit more than it could before the banking crisis. So let's celebrate. Hooray.

Now let's home in on the amounts. The average wage excluding bonuses is now £511.61. In March 2008, the average wage would have bought you £510.96 (in 2019 prices). In other words you are 65p better off than you were - 12 years ago.

There's always a half-full or a half-empty angle on wage increases. But to many workers, this minor economic landmark will serve less as a cause for celebration and more as a reminder that the past decade has been the worst for improvements in living standards in more than 200 years.

The 2008 crisis, caused in part by reckless mismanagement of the banks, is one reason (not the only one) that the average pay packet has failed to do what we used to take for granted - i.e. increase by more than inflation.

It used to happen every year. Low-pay think tank the Resolution Foundation points out that if pre-crisis trends for increases in pay in real terms had continued, the average wage would now be £141 a week higher.

But the BBC commenters are absolutely loving undeterred:

quote:

even good news is viewed negatively,
No doubt this 'bad news' is due to Brexit voters.
If everyone was happy that would also be a downside of Brexit.
"I remember the good old days when we could be miserable"

Some people's glasses are always fully empty, and its always someone else to blame.

Get over it whingers.

quote:

Every comment on this HYS complaining about the lack of regular wage increases over 10 years, totally ignores the accompanying low rates of inflation

I recall UK inflation at a rate of 27% in the early 1970s, even under the Tory regime of Edward Heath. I also remember Bank Interest rates at 15% and costly Mortgages of 8%.

Todays young 'Snowflakes' on this HYS have no idea at all.

gently caress yeah how horrible to have 15% interest rates!

quote:

I retired from the C S in 2011 and at that time of you did not perform according t o your annual appraisal you didn't get an annual pay rise and you were barred from promotions.

You think you should have a pay rise if you haven't performed????
