ESPN posted:

MLB is considering a move in which each league would have three division winners and four wild-card teams making the postseason starting in 2022, sources said. The best team in the league would receive a bye into the division series. The two remaining division winners and the wild-card team with the best record of the four would each host all games of a best-of-three series in the opening round.

Once the teams clinch and the regular season ends, the plan gets congested:

The division winner with the second-best record would select its wild-card opponent from the three wild-card winners not hosting a series.

The division winner with the worst record would then choose its opponent from the remaining two wild-card teams.

The final matchup would pit the wild-card winner with the best record against the wild-card team not yet chosen.

All of the selections, sources said, would be unveiled live on television the Sunday night of the final regular-season games.

so basically they want to make the march madness bracket reveal show, which isn't the worst idea, but the MM bracket show gets to run completely unopposed.

This is going to run on a Sunday night against an NFL game on network television.

I like the "pick your opponent"aspect but I think adding more playoff spots hurts regular season play. Baseball it's the only sport where just making the playoffs is a big deal and good. I hate to lose that.

We get to the show and it's just a mannequin of Brian Cashman holding up a Twins logo in his left hand so Cashman himself doesn't have to go through the trouble of stating the obvious.

I'm not sure if Walton World is a thing but it should be.

Is it a gimmick? Absolutely but treating basketball (especially the college version) if not all sports as a carnival sideshow instead of end all be all of human existence gives it the added bizarreness that life occasionally needs

He always had a lot of good moments and could be fun but he was a lot more prone to John Wooden worshipping "these players today don't understand what basketball is supposed to be" type stuff back in the day, which he has corrected by no longer actually paying any attention to the game he's ostensibly supposed to be commenting on.

And also in his defense late 90s/early 00s basketball really was unwatchable garbage.

Most random cranks are a lot less joyful about it than he is, that's his real appeal. He's clearly having a lot of fun and it's infectious.

Yes, but it was more of the Wooden worshipping that made him insufferable. I specifically remember him calling the Fab Five the greatest collective disappointment in the history of sports or something like that - because they didn't win four straight titles - and it took numerous people to tell him to shut the gently caress up about it before he finally would.

It's funny that Manfred keeps trying to find new rules to make the game more appealing but the biggest issue is that it's hard for a lot of people to even watch the product. Local blackout rules mean few people under 35 are going to watch their local team. Local TV deals have locked out Dodgers fans and likely most Cubs fans this season from seeing their team play.

MLB finds new ways to make it harder to follow the sport.

MLB doesn't seem to understand that the demographic they're chasing has a very low tolerance of bullshit. It feels like they see Sears and want to replicate that instead
