newspaper editors are ratfuck cowards too scared to be sued by anyone whose estate can afford a good lawyer so bc this oval office is never actually going to get prosecuted for murder from beyond the grave it’s barely pipping the news cycle and next time a ‘valued member of the community’ murders their family we’ll be back where we started.

Also the storm ripping through south east Queensland is hosed, it’s nowhere near me and I can’t hear poo poo but it’s literally lighting up a section of the sky near me like day light.

spoiler tagging sad anger cause domestic violence isn't taken seriously enough at all and people don't believe how widespread it really is overall.

i am the only woman in my entire extended family who hasn't had to deal with a physically violent spouse at some stage. i was violently abused by my step dad as a kid but as for partner's I've had emotionally and mentally manipulative people and one violent hook up which put me on the extreme defensive since and i consider myself lucky.

my little sister has had it real bad and had to get avo's on several exes which really scares me for her sake. we both ended up becoming social workers probably largely because of our pasts.

she deals with kids now while i mostly work with the elderly and behind the scenes so poo poo like this is nothing new to either of us but i worry for her mental health in the long term. i am mentally broken enough and detached to the level that switching off is something i manage okay but i secretly hope she either switches fields or manages to keep it from dragging her under but i never want to say it to her directly.

i just wish society as a whole would do more to stamp it out and we wouldn't have this poo poo happening as often as it does. maybe because this case is high profile people will pay more attention but i am not optimistic in the short term.

please reach out to people you know and show support how you can because we need all of society to work together to make any real progress. sorry for the depression post just have to get it out.

While the haze blanketing Canberra has finally lifted, local wineries are only just beginning to feel the affect of months of smoky air.

At its worst, Canberra's air quality reading during the bushfire period topped 7,000 — anything over 200 is considered hazardous — and there were 49 days locals were encouraged to stay inside because the air was too smoky.

But for local winemakers, the smoke has had a devastating effect, penetrating their grapes and, for several wineries, destroying their 2020 vintage.

Unfortunately, I think the high profile aspect of this case will lead to the mental illness narrative getting trotted out.

yeah it sucks bc mental health is hosed and we need a better system but also this happens every loving time and people seem to only have this hard on for improving mental health outcomes for men immediately after they murder their loving family. And yet men murder their families all the time and we still don't have any better outcomes in the mental health system, just a vague sense that something is wrong and we can't stop it. It feels like Americans and mass shootings.

Good thing we have all these sports programs to push more young kids into both idolising and attempting to become professional athletes, which im sure had nothing to do with why the fuckhead in question decided to do this (because his career was over and he wasnt charismatic or funny enough to land a tv/radio gig talking exclusively about the only thing he knows a single thing about - footy)

I definitely see general "genres" of kids in my work. And there is a definite a group of kids who have disengaged with a syllabus nearly entirely. I wonder if there is value in trying to create special in school programs to try and re-engage them rather than writing them off as ratbag students

Like can it be done? I dunno

I'm pretty sure there are more and more radical high schools opening and having success, but also I think there needs to be more recognition that sometimes kids just aren't in the right place at the right time when it comes to school and uni and need other options or to be supported without stigma into moving out into the workforce.

Personally I never completed high school after completely doing my head with stress and anxiety about achieving results. It only took a year out of school and working with my hands to realise their were plenty of rewarding ways to grow in the world that had nothing to do with your ATAR results. Since that realisation I stopped regretting high school and have enjoyed pretty much every aspect of my working life ever since.

I know programs involving TAFE etc exist but I don't remember ever being presented this as an option. I was just a bad depressed loser student even though I'd achieved very well until year 10.

Yeah I have a couple ideas for the type of change that I feel is necessary

1.Like doing a means test of what the average person can remember of high school and shooting towards that with specialised paths for students who want to exceed , if this means traditional school only goes to like year 8 so be it, maybe having a more robust tafe type system for adult learning

2. Decoupling age from classroom grouping entirely. Have the system be more competency based. And you shift through complexity of classes as you achieve higher. Having a few 13 who are really good at math or English along side 17 years Olds who are there too seems like and interesting idea with some merit

3. Have rather large classes , like 100-150 students in large school hall type classrooms where there are 2-5 roving teachers who can create small groups on the fly to more effectively teach

I'm not championing any of these more than another but I really feel like the British factory line method of teaching is so culturally coupled to the idea of education and it's doing a disservice to the students

i was a problem student and dropped out in year 7 cause of a mix of mental health issues which society didn't want to accept or address at the time. ended up going to tafe in my 20s when i was in a better space and got my life on track by 30 but i feel if there was some outreach and support things could have gone very differently for sure since mainstream school waa not at all suitable for me at the time.

In so much as domestic violence and estrangement of partners etc is a massive problem in Australia, I believe there is an aspect of the way that the divorce and Family Courts in Australia work that is directly contributing to it. Not that it's in any way entirely responsible, but I see it as being a definite driver in some aspects. There's obviously a lot of nuances and specificity to each situation of course.

I talk to friends and colleagues who are divorced or separated from their partners, where the partner had specifically taken them to court over custody or divorce proceedings. The family court in Australia still has a massive bias towards giving fathers as little access as possible to their kids, and seems to be structured in a way that financial support must also always come from the father.

For example, one of my staff is a divorced man, he has a 16yo daughter with his ex wife. When they divorced, he got an apartment with a second bedroom specifically so she had her own space, even though he's on a sub 55k a year salary. His wife remarried, and after their divorce went and got her teaching degree. So now she's in a $180k or so a year combined income situation, and this dude is stuck in low income jobs, yet still he has to fork out child support and I can see the absolute bitterness and vitriol in him when he talks about it.

Another mate struggled to get custody of his son, when he was married to a woman and had taken on parenting her 3 kids, and at the time the mother of his child was a genuine ice addict (which was why he left her), yet the courts kept saying no, partial custody and it took him numerous battles in court to prove that his ex partner was a full blown junkie and wasn't taking care of the kid. It's loving wildly biased imvho.

Also as much as it is trotted out, you can't just discount the fact that there is minimal effort for ensuring that mental health on both parties is checked in on. Generally, women are better at talking about what's going on mentally with their friends, but because of the way our society is structured, it's considered weak for men to do so, which is where some of these issues come from, they get pent up then snap in a violent outburst. It took me personally a very long time to address my own mental health issues and see a psych because I was conditioned to think it was weak and "girly" to do so, but I'm at a point in my life now where I have done it and realised the insanely high importance of taking your mental health seriously.

This is also a huge issue within Australia. There's so much room for improvement on mental health funding but the government is more concerned with "muh mining industry"
