(I didn't buy SW2 since I saw too many red flags)

They basically turned a single-player game into a co-op lootbox thingie, with socketing gems into your choice of 150+ guns! Since the reboot got accolades for having a great, if understated, plot&characters than it had any right to, we decided to just throw that away.

SW2013 had a menagerie problem for sure, but it didn't deserve gutting everything else about it to fix that.

Right, but is SW2 only bad because it's not what people wanted after SW1? Or is it, on its own, a bad/unfun game? I have both and have only played a little of SW1/2013, but still might want to give 2 a shot unless it's just a poo poo game all around.

It’s playable, like it’s not inherently bad, but it’s also not a game I’d fully recommend on its own merits either. If you already own it, it’s worth giving a shot.

The main issue with it is the levels feel like they’re randomly generated, but they aren’t. They’re just really generic and repetitive.

No dude it is a straight up bad game that tries to hammer bad loot game mechanics onto a very small set of boring maps. If you’re going to make a game that depends on having people replay sections over and over again you have to make the encounters and loot interesting, but they did not.

This is also a good answer, thank you! i don't generally concern myself with sequels that disappoint as sequels as long as there's a good game still in there, but if it's just repetitive gameplay and lovely Borderlands mechanics, then I'm not super pumped about it.

As a side note: I still love Deus Ex: Invisible War and play it every other year or so. I like the other three main games more, but still like I:War. I consider the other three games 9-10/10, and I-War a 7.

Shadow Warrior 2 is one of the worst shooters I've ever played, as a sequel to one of the best. After an extremely well written game (by videogame standards) they delivered something with writing that is actively insulting. Like loving Rockstar would go "this is not good enough for a GTA game" level bad.

This page is crazy talk. Shadow Warrior 2 has some pretty good combat and while not as polished as something like Doom 2016 it is faster due to all the movement options and being made for PC first. It was well received on release and if you like FPS titles you should give it a try whenever it's on sale and form your own opinion on it. The writing is bad but it's the kind of sequel that's just story-wise pointless rather than retroactively ruining what came before like Wolfenstein II or Darkness II did.

Also goddammit Max Payne 2 has the only escort mission in the history of time that isn’t total dogshit because you’re escorting around a man in a animal costume who can’t stop swearing and panicking. I mean sure on the fifth play through it’s sorta grating but I think MP2 is nearly a perfect game and their escort mission design is proof of that as far as I’m concerned

The escortee in that mission has a bomb strapped to him and will expode if he encounters so much as a fly fart.

I think that level might be the only time I've found an escort mission to be as annoying as people say escort missions are.

Yeah, count me in

SW2 was fine combat wise once you ignored the 5000 junk upgrades, but was a mess otherwise. Multiple quests ended in a broken way, such as saying "LOOK AT THAT BIG EXPLOSION!' when no explosion actually happened.

I enjoyed SW2 a lot and while the writing isn’t as good as SW1 I am surprised at the vitriol towards it as I found the combat and weapons extremely satisfying.

I also feel describing it as worse than Borderlands is really inaccurate. Lo Wang is more of a character and has way more presence, not to mention occasional moments of development, than all of the Borderlands characters put together. Even with the admittedly weaker writing in SW2.

The ending was the only big problem for me but as they did commission a Stan Bush song for the final battle I can’t bring myself to describe it as bad.

i would very much absolutely go to bat for sw2's combat being more fun than borderlands. the former may have had the dumb gem slot stuff, but most of it could just be flat-out ignored and beyond that the actual weapons have more punch to them, part of that being due to them actually being defined and unique things despite there being a hell of a lot. the latter smells more like an rpg/fps combo down to the bullet-sponge enemies and most of the guns are what one would expect out of mostly randomly-generated crap.

I "acquired" BL3 for about an hour and the shooting is so bad & lame. And this is supposed to be the good one?

E: I thought SW2's combat was actually better than DO4M's in a lot of ways. I also enjoyed its massive arsenal, described it as "modlike" and thought most of the guns were fun to look at and to shoot. Shame about the procgen maps and needlessly tacked on, over-fiddly gem system.

there's a sort of unique joy in getting the triple-barrel sawn-off in sw2 and modding it for ice damage and maybe some charge-shot nonsense so you can spike enemies with a large crack and watch them splinter into shards of ice

I love weapon modding in games. Particularly when it's deep and will let you do stupid/awesome things like DX's pocket sniper rifle. But I don't want a million different guns that you're constantly shuffling because of slightly higher stats.

ok so you want a high-damage fire gun for these girls, but make sure you have a corrosive gun for those robots, and oh yeah there's a beefy boy better whip out your slag gun and slag him ok he's slagged now switch back to your damage gun (they are all very slightly different versions of the same gun because you specced into this tree goddamnit you can't go changing gun types)

I liked the system in Blacklight: Retribution where you're able to fine-tune your guns from a list of various parts like it's an Armored Core.

I dunno, I definitely felt like SW2's writing poo poo all over the first game. It made everything that happened in 1 pointless, a cheap joke, or both.

1's ending loses all its impact knowing that Hoji's sacrifice and the entire war of the Ancients was all for someone who turned out to be a walking sex joke who was just as evil as everyone else

I spent the whole game wondering what drama happened behind the scenes, because it really feels like all the writing was screaming "That last game was bullshit, gently caress whoever thought that was good, right guys?"

also yeah, shadow warrior 2's story is like an active wet poo poo on top of whatever the first reboot game managed to make out of being a reboot of a racist and janky as gently caress build engine game. the first reboot's story was pretty alright and actually sorta well done. the second comes off like someone had an active vendetta against whoever the hell wrote the first.

The one Bethesda is about to sell next month.

Which is itself an extension of Doom 64 EX linked above, I guess. It's improved to the point that the demos work in it, though, and I already found a bug with EX and secret counts doubling every time I save mid-level and load aforementioned save, so the free version of EX isn't the be-all-end-all even still.

Even the gravity turned out to be wrong in EX. The official one next month is the one you want, guaranteed. It's amazing what you discover is wrong when you get paid to look at your own work very closely (plus trying to get the attract demos to work certainly helped). :v:

Shadow Warrior 2 has possibly the worst FPS combat Ive ever played. Enemies have massive, ludicrously large pools of health compared to the damage they deal. Guns are all pretty boring and all that really matters is their base damage as you wont have enough upgrade doodads without playing multi to ever seriously upgrade them, unless you count the 8 million trinkets of +2 acid damage which is just an insult.

The level design is just three huge heavily repeated maps so you never feel like you are making progress whatsoever and the story is poo poo.
