You want Sanders to win in November. I want Sanders to win in November. But getting to November is a long, rough road, and though Sanders is the frontrunner, we've only been through two primaries so far. He needs every ounce of support he can get, especially when there are many people who have begun flocking to Bloomberg, thanks in part to his infinite number of dollars. And even when/if Sanders gets the nomination, Trump and the Republicans are going to pull every dirty trick and illegal scheme they can to steal the election out from Sanders.

There's a movement behind Sanders to sweep him into office. But your job is to get every imaginable person behind you in that movement. They might not like it, and you certainly won't like it, but you're going to have to suck it up, because you can't write anyone off, because the second you rest on your laurels and think "we have the youth, we have the momentum, we have the truth, we're going to win, who needs those jerks," is the second that Bloomberg or Trump is going to sweep in and slit your goddamn throat. Don't give them that chance—accept that politics is when politics is, play nice, and have all the schadenfreude you want after Sanders is nominated — and not a second before.

At what point do you draw the line on compromise? Kids in cages? Stop and Frisk? Where is the delineation between politics and human rights violations. Its compromise like that which drives a huge portion of people away from being voters. When they see people like Bloomberg and they're skeevy past and poo poo policies get equal weight under the DNC leadership as Bernie the reaction is to not trust the Democrats as a party. One awful room mate ruins the whole house party. Just because the democratic party is loving over people less than the republicans is irrelevant if they're still terrible and give platforms to loving over the poor, minorities, etc.

No one is asking you to, nor do you need to. But if you think that Sanders can win the White House with just his primary base alone, I've got some bad news for you.

Not sure why some of you guys are conflating "not alienating primary voters who voted for someone other than Sanders" with "People who are totally cool with putting kids in cages and stop and frisk." You can tell the people who are cool with evil poo poo to gently caress off while also not actively alienating primary voters who didn't necessarily vote for your guy. This isn't rocket science.

in actual news, the 11th Cir ruled that Florida cannot deny re-enfranchisement to people who do not have the ability to pay. this injunction only affects the 17 named plaintiffs in the suit but it is likely to be expanded.

https://theappeal.org/florida-voting-rights-felony-fines-fees-amendment-4/

“These plaintiffs are punished more harshly than those who committed precisely the same crime—by having their right to vote taken from them likely for their entire lives,” the opinion said. “And this punishment is linked not to their culpability, but rather to the exogenous fact of their wealth.”

there is no need to compromise, just ask people what's important to them, the overwhelming majority will give you a lead you can use to turn them to bernie. it's also good to talk about what's happened in your life that makes you need a Sanders presidency. don't talk about all the things the person is wrong about, and don't worry about getting them to come around in one conversation (or at all, if feminism, socialism, and/or anti-racism isn't in their class interest), but do ask them point blank if you can count on them to vote for bernie. make them feel it, because it's true: you need them.

volunteer to canvass and you'll get shown the complete five-point ask flowchart, practice it five times a day like a muzzein is singing to you.

e: this applies to many more people than just democratic primary voters

Just realized it's the anniversary of my first donation to Bernie 2020, when I was surprised by the "why?" ask box on the receipt page, then channeled every ounce of righteous indignation in my body and posted like I had never posted before.

quote:

My mother was born in the coal country of Fayette Co. WV in 1963.

She watched her father die when she was six years old. Our MeeMaw raised four children alone on her wages from the Sears shoe department in the most impoverished region in America. They didn't have running water until the 1970's.

Mom always wanted to be a writer. When she graduated from Mount Hope High School in 1983 she scraped together what she had saved from her after school job at Liggett's department store and started looking for a college she could afford. Massilon Baptist College of Ohio was the only option within her reach.

It was a trap. After an education much heavier on misogynistic evangelical theology and light on workplace skills, she found herself with a controlling husband and two sons, rootless and living in the Carolinas blocks from his family and far, far from hers.

We were evicted from our first home there because she wouldn't sleep with the millionaire business owner landlord. The second, where we stayed for nine years, was an uninsulated shack 20 minutes from the nearest town. Mom worked as a carhop at Sonic for a few years, then at Dollar General, eventually making her way to the store manager position she would hold for nearly 20 years. Dad spent this time as an on again off again truck driver, usually spending on the road as much as he made. The times he was on long hauls were the best of my childhood and we all secretly hoped he wouldn't come back.

In 1999, during a brief window of relative stability, my parents bought a patch of land on the other side of town and a doublewide trailer that they had no idea how to negotiate for with a loan no sane person would ever have approved were their own money at risk. Namely, $145,000 at 12% APR variable. This, when interest rates were the lowest they had ever been in US history.

Dollar General was the target of repeated venture capital takeovers. Suddenly, Mom was the only "Exempt Salaried Employee" in the store, filling every gap in the schedule left by an ever shrinking payroll with her own unpaid hours. She was pulling 10 to 15 hour shifts unloading trucks and manning registers for the equivalent of $9/hr. Her bad home life and nonexistent social life having stripped her of the confidence to believe anything better than this was possible for her, Ma soldiered on.

She was fired without notice in 2012 because her time-in-position raises had made her more expensive than a new hire, lost her house, took an assistant manager position at another discount store chain and was then diagnosed with terminal breast cancer after she had been there for two months, not yet eligible for company insurance or FMLA.

Three months after she died, I recieved a letter from the CFPB addressed to her, finding that her mortgage servicer had acted improperly by refusing to adjust the terms of her loan and containing a settlement check for $21.00.

My mother was grist for the wheels of capitalism's worst excesses every single day of her life and I will give the full measure of my time, treasure, and blood to build an America where no one is treated like that.

Today was her birthday.

That's why.

One year and three pairs of shoes later we are going to win and we are going to build the country she deserved to live in.

Also, to tie this back to the original point Jon Faverau was making, don't be or condone insane people who leave threatening voicemails and emails for union officials who are against Medicare for All, but I was assuming most of you weren't doing that anyway.

eh, I get where they're coming from. A lot of what the PSA guys talk about is just general political strategy, and it does make sense that, even if Twitter isn't real life, negative interactions with a candidate's supporter can and will influence a person's views of that candidate (Even if that candidate has already disavowed people acting like dicks on his behalf, as Sanders has). Easier to attract flies with a spoonful of honey rather than a spoonful of vinegar, and all that.

JonFavs is a dumbass who touts 'welcoming antiabortion dems into the tent' because women's reproductive health is a worthy sacrifice, in his world. He can honestly go gently caress himself. TBH, even if Bernie finally went back on it, I'm still plenty pissed at him for the Heath Whoever nonsense.

I see it this way, another 4/8 years of dems pussy footing around with bipartisan centrist third way triangulated 'reach across the aisle to Nazis' horse poo poo is going to accomplish the exact opposite of progress and set the table for Trump 2.0: Full Fascist Edition. We either swing for the fences, pound pavement, knock doors, give money, and put in the work to get people in all levels of office (Seriously y'all, if you live in the Maryland/DC area PM me and I will hook you up with the people to start canvassing for McKayla Wilkes. Do it! I have their numbers in my phone right now.) who will fix poo poo or just accept that everything is too deeply hosed and it's not getting fixed absent violent revolution.

Electability arguments can give the inside of my colon a tongue bath. Winning with people that won't actually fix poo poo isn't worth the effort. I'm going to work on people that are.

I agree but

Same. I just want people to be mad and to say the quiet parts loud. The quiet parts about poverty and inequality and climate change. I want our politicians to at least stop ignoring that these issues exist.

I worry about this.

Like, no one has pressed Sanders about his continued support of the filibuster. So what does he expect to accomplish if he isn't as craven as the GOP?

Mind, I'd be fine if he was. It's about loving time. But I don't see M4A, or anything, passing with him in office if he continues to insist on keeping the reanimated corpse of :decorum: present and accounted for. I just see a lot of shouting that, in the end, demotivates all the same voters that are currently pushing him into office when 'poo poo ain't getting done' starts to sink in as a reality. Like, to me, that looks like another stepping stone into Full Fascist Edition when the next round of elections hits.

Like whoever it is that's in there, they're going to have to start tearing up the old rulebooks, and Sanders' pledge to keep the filibuster is making 'Obama 2.0 except a lot more disappointing' flash into my head with disturbing frequency.
