SKULL.GIF posted:Was there ever a follow-up on that study that indicated that SARS-2 largely targeted East Asian men with lung issues and other groups weren't nearly as vulnerable? I know this is from earlier but I thought it was worth answering anyway; many of those early trends largely evaporated From here: http://weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/id/e53946e2-c6c4-41e9-9a9b-fea8db1a8f51 This is the same publication that a bunch of people quoted the "death rate is 15% in people >80 but 0 deaths in children" from. The most important factor appears to be age. Gender - doesn't matter, men and women have caught this at equal rates and are basically dying at equal rates. Slightly more men have died but the difference is lost in the noise Underlying medical issues - People who also had cardiovascular disease had a mortality rate of 10%; people with "chronic respiratory disease" had a mortality rate of 6%; cancer was also 6%, diabetes 6%, hypertension 7%. But remember that the most likely people to have these conditions are also old. It didn't look at whether or not people smoked but if "a lot more men than women in China smoke" is to be believed (???) then smoking might not matter much because men are only dying at a ever-so-slightly larger rate. "Well maybe the air pollution has everyone in lovely health" has been another suggestion but there's no easy way to check for that in this data. Age - If you're under 40 the mortality rate was 0.2%, under 50 was 0.4%, and then things get exponentially worse. 70-79 year-olds died at a rate of 8%, > 80 died at a rate of 15%. People at those ages get hit hardest by flu, too, they're just not as likely to be able to handle bad diseases. So as has been the case with basically everything else about this virus, you treat it like much deadlier, much more spreadable influenza: immunocompromised people need the most precaution, old people too, chronic health conditions slightly less so, young adults and especially kids will mostly be okay.

So it turns out the number of confirmed cases in the US may be frozen at 15 not because of successful early intervention, but because the current tests are so unreliable barely anyone is getting tested until the CDC finds a new method.
