It's important to remember the British Tories of today are without question the worst iteration of the Tories since the Thatcher era, in fact, perhaps since forever. They have been rapidly getting much worse ever since UKIP started stealing their voter base. David Cameron was mild by comparison.

Yeah, Cameron was scared shitless of UKIP and his genius idea was... for the tories to basically become UKIP

He didn't account for the possibility that the tories might literally, no poo poo, actually become UKIP

Most of the SNP are republicans but it would be very dumb to fight that battle at the same time as independence and alienate all the monarchist voters, ie most voters.

Love too think the kippers are a looney fringe on the far edges of the Tories who will be absolutely crushed when Brexit loses badly.

Oh wait poo poo we're actually a party of swivel-eyed racist twats! Turns out when you play to that base for decades they capture and absorb the party!!

I would also be surprised if an independent Scotland included the Queen in any form of the government beyond the most figurehead position possible, which would also make it easy to get rid of the position down the line.

Good stuff. Get it enacted.

So there's actually an interesting backstory on the prisoner voting thing. The European Court of Human Rights said the UK's blanket ban was a no go way way back in 2005. The UK Gov, shockingly did nothing and continues to do basically nothing.

The Devolved Administrations actually can't do nothing following them getting legal control (2/3 majority needed to action change) over their franchise process (Wales Act 2017, Scotland Act 2016), it's literally impossible for them to do nothing long term against the European Court of Human Rights because eventually someone will take them to court and win which would force a law change. The UK Gov just laughs and says 'yeah we're not doing that' and that's A-OK.

In terms of Scotland, the Scottish Equality and Human Rights Commission, seemingly as a result of a letter by Green MSP Patrick Harvie, decided to do a report and push the Scottish Gov to actually take action. The report called on the Scottish Gov to legislate for the enfranchisement of all prisoners and that Scotland should 'aim for a higher standard than recently established at UK level.' The Scottish Gov said, look, you fuckers (editorialising here), it is 'neither appropriate, nor necessary to ensure compliance with the ECHR to enfranchise all prisoners.' Long story shorter*, that's how they ended up with 12 months being basically decided as the minimum for legal compliance.

Wales is actually a lot better here (not perfect), but the call for the enquiry came from the Llywydd (speaker of the Welsh Assembly) herself and resulted in the Welsh Gov beginning the process of adopting a 4 year recommendation. This is still not in legislation yet and I'm watching closely to make sure they don't chicken out and only put it in local elections.

* Scottish Gov also did a subsequent consultation which contained hilarious leading options. These were 6 months, which was ruled unlikely to conform to the ruling, 12 months, which is what they wanted or 'Another Duration'.

Queen will retain her position as Head of state. There's a whole section about it in the white paper.

Way too many indy voters lean on "Well the SNP are saying and doing X but actually deep down they want Y so it's all ok*

It's very disappointing unfortunately. I don't know enough of its history to understand why, but it's squatting on the right wing of Labour and seems to do less to promote co-ops than the left.

Also disappointed with the making GBS threads on Burgon because he "sounds a bit thick". He's come the most correct so far with what he's been saying from a left perspective imo.

In other Scottish news, lol at the SNP saying ministers can't meet communities surrounding Mossmorran because of SEPA legal action, which was ongoing last year when ministers met with community groups.....

Maybe one day the SNP will take environmental issues seriously and perhaps even stop peat extraction.

I think the idea is that people have made some very similar negative sexual aspersions about young single mothers as they have about gay and bi people, all under the broad umbrella of 'sexual immorality', and they shouldn't, so there's shared experiences for solidarity there.

Which is a fair point, and we should all build on our shared solidarity as marginalized groups rather than continually snipe at each other.

On the other hand the rainbow braces and scrunchy are a bit like showing up at BAME Labour in a Madiba shirt to explain how growing up on a council estate and listening to reggae means you've got shared cause, and also a bit like

Like the Scottish Government is going to give me a massive interest free loan to do unnecessary work to my home but still approved new peat extraction just up the road from me. There's a joined up environmental policy right there.

I mean the braces and scrunchie are a powerful flex that I 100% support were it employed against the tories and I feel odd saying people shouldn't dress up as a show of solidarity given I know cishet people doing that for pride, but it does seem slightly... off combined with explicitly saying that being LGBT has nothing to do with who you have sex with. Which... OK again yes I sort of see where you're going but on the other hand literally no it has quite a lot to do with that.

I like the enthusiasm but combined with the BAME stuff it feels like the sort of attitude you associate with being a teenager who totally wants to hang out with all the cool kids.

And I don't even mind that necessarily, I wish there were more of that kind of seemingly naive enthusiasm floating around, it's just strange and slightly worrying to see in someone who wants to be a senior politician lol. It seems like the attitude that's likely to lead to some terrible headlines later down the line but on the other hand I might actually prefer it to more godawful politician noises on the subject.

It's toeing the line between slightly offensive commodification and big dumb enthusiasm and I don't entirely know how to read it or whether or not I actually like it regardless :v:
