Another problem as I understand it with that type of thing (getting in very deep water for any length of time) is that the various seals for non engine stuff like axles, wheel hubs, suspension, those seals aren't meant to hold back water pressure from the outside so you're likely to end up with failures in other components after the fact.

I love it when tools who think "snorkel, cool" fail to realize that in order to avoid car boat one has to open the door and let the water in.

Ford's "Off-Roading Supplement" manual they at least used to bundle with all their trucks and SUVs states that any time you cross water that goes above the axle center line you need to change the diff lube and re-grease a few other things before any extended high speed operation, for exactly this reason.

When the pinion seal failed on my E46 I made it about 10 more miles (not yet knowing what had happened) at 80 MPH before the diff was singing me the song of its people. That was with most of the lube gone though, not sure what value a flood water + gear lube milkshake might have.

That's really the geometry of balanced resistance. It's why pressure vessel cylinders have elliptic (IIRC? might be mixing up the geometric description) heads. Also demonstrates very succinctly why you approach an overpressured vessel from perpendicular, its gonna fail around a head 95% of the time. And the other 5% is why you try to just not approach overpressured vessels if you have half the chance.

This is very close to me (I can still see the flooding from my window), and they had issue warnings for people not to remove 'Road Closed' signs or try to drive through flood water and still one person died, and a whole bunch had to be rescued by helicopter and boat.
