You should replace Jack Kirby with Robert E Howard, who was an actual contemporary of Lovecraft and who once took a story that Lovecraft started which ended with the main character becoming a weird alien monster and added "...then he realized that this ruled actually," and wrote a hundred pages about his awesome space adventures

I remember back when i was in college reading about this while doing research on minorities in media. The path is generally somehting along the lines of: >Villans and Badguys >People of Authority (Cops, Doctors, etc) >Regular people w/ flaws like all the rest there might be another intermediate step there, but I forget. See also that tweet about fantasylands with a token black character who is head of the castle guard.

I was doing the books for a Let's Read thread and I couldn't believe how loving lame the reveal in the book is. He saves her from the rapists in Port Angeles, bullies her into going to dinner with him, and then they talk about it on the drive home and he just outs himself.
