MizPiz posted:Is making fun of people for having reusable bottles actually a thing? i'm not sure what is actually going on here, but expensive reusable waterbottles as items of conspicuous consumption seems like something that is inevitable if it hasn't already happened, and at least some of the people who buy into that will interpret it as misogyny when told it is stupid. on the other hand the right has been making which scams you fall for a gendered issue for a long time as part of its own scam. but the truth is that it's all just people defending grifts because anyone doing anything else is either coopted or drowned out. which subset of the coopted are at least honestly trying to operate in good faith is quite effectively obscured.

With the incredibly large caveat that it's exhausting work, but you're mostly left alone and not made to swallow corporate bullshit or deal with the actual public. They also take their safety seriously in a very Victorian "the orphans jammed in the gears of the machines are slowing production!" kind of way.

The one goon I know working in one was very happy about it, but when you're in a place with no jobs whatsoever and one salary from being a warehouse drone is more than your entire family has made in your entire lifetime that's less a statement on how good Amazon is and more of a statement on how terrible things can be in this "economic powerhouse" of a country if you're in the wrong ZIP code. E: sorry, that was about working at Amazon, not working at a slave whip factory. EE: although most Amazon pickers have probably shipped at least one recreational slave whip.

obviously that post is all inaccurate bullshit, but the funny one to me is the childcare proposal - warren's isn't universal and bernie's (which is) was originally proposed in a congressional bill from 2010 (he's been advocating for it much longer than that ofc)

H.P. Hovercraft posted:i've worked as a warehouse picker in southern louisiana during the summer you guys should read "On the Clock" by emily guendelsberger, she works at one of these places and befriends and interviews people who also work there and there are absolutely people who will both admit it's brutal, brutal work and say that it's a great job, because people's expectations about what a job is meant to do for you is so low that any tiny glimmer of positivity is viewed as wonderful blessed freedom. you might work 14 hours a day and walk ten miles and get dinged for using the bathroom 45secs too long but---they don't switch shifts on you without at least TWO days notice, such benevolence! It's awful.

IME a ~$15/hr warehouse job seems pretty alright when you're a broke kid with no qualifications who just wants to get paid without being harassed every waking hour by psychotic shift managers, until you inevitably injure yourself and are absolutely hosed for the remainder of your days but that just says more about how gratuitously wretched companies have made basic low-level retail and construction jobs than how great lifting boxes until your spine collapses is A Wizard of Goatse has issued a correction as of 18:18 on Feb 25, 2020 |

thicc_waluigi posted:Absolutely, but I'm not sure if I've seen "feudalism was socialist" before it sort of makes sense if you don't understand that what we think of as government, the state, was a late-stage development for feudalism, and that "government" before that was a joint effort between a few families who owned literally everything pledging loyalty to the most powerful family amoung them, and the church. our concept of private ownership is just not formally restricting the ability to purchase land and a more expansive idea of what can be done with it (capital). "l'état, c'est moi" - a private landowner whose family had generously let peasants live on their land and created jobs for them

It's a dumbass conception where they think that feudalism was pure centralization, which is contradicted by the basic premise of "feudalism" but also extremely wrong in thinking that actual feudal societies were "pure" anything. This merges with the equally stupid belief that socialism means "centralizing all economic decisions to a single person." Which is also incredibly dumb since the basic premise of socialism is that workers get a say that they don't get under capitalism. It's not even a fun insanity like anarcho monarchism.
