Sometimes I really wish that it was possible to do a proper study of wildlife dynamics over time in China, but it can't really happen because you'd have to start by acknowledging that the vast majority of even vaguely edible land animals got almost wiped out few decades ago, which is both why it would be interesting and also why it's not allowed.

Yeeeep. These cases were pretty well known in consulates throughout China and you are right that it's usually men skipping out on their wives.

The money is gone unless they left it in their personal accounts where the courts can get to it (this is worth checking) or the person leaves China again to somewhere with enforceable laws.

Well, at least in the "skip back to China with as much of their foreign spouse's $$$ as they can grab" scenario if they run back to Hong Kong you'd have a decent chance of litigating some money back from them.

Is it 双黄连?poo poo pisses me off so much, party acts like their censorship is to protect people from fake news but people (the drug makers?) start spreading that 双黄连 kills the virus and they do nothing, and you know what's in that bullshit? Skullcap, forsythia and honeysuckle. The gently caress is that gonna do?

A lot of companies post-2008 saw a huge boost in sales coming from China. Some of them even spent a lot of money to increase their capacity under the assumption that demand from China will stay high or increase. But all this demand from China was going to be temporary because it was a result of a huge growth in debt, and there's only so much debt that can be pushed into the economy before it stops having an effect. So you have a bunch of companies trying to chase the boom they saw a decade ago but are refusing to believe that the Chinese economy is slowing down or naively hoping that the boom years will return again.

Pretty much this. Unless you're some luxury brand that has very good name recognition in China, you're gonna have a bad time. If you're a product that doesn't have a competitor in China then expect to spend a shitload of money getting established and up and running. Then a few months later all your IP and and manufacturing processes go out the back door and a local company with CCP support starts doing the same thing. Somehow all of your client data and contract info make it to this competing start-up and they undercut you until you have to close shop.

China is "untapped market potential" and that matters when you run the doomsday capitalism of modern American corporations which end up like a massive pyramid scheme hellbent on profit, and you want in on the ground floor for best returns before the poor debt themselves into insolvency.

It’s basically turboflu, yes.

Masks at great to stop you from spraying spittle everywhere. Eye shields prevent you from mindlessly putting your dirty maws in your eyes.

If you're in close proximity with someone who is sick for a long period of time, the masks could help you from inhaling any droplets they expel. But you'd need something like an N95 rated mask that makes a tight seal around your mouth and nose, and not those surgical masks that you see everyone in Asia typically wearing. Also, it doesn't do anything to protect your eyes from coming into contact with the droplets, or if later on you touch your mouth or nose without cleaning your hands after being near someone sick.

This is a still from the excellent movie "Contagion" where Jude Law plays a snake oil salesman. Don't feel too relieved that it's from a movie though. Actual scammers act exactly like his character. There's already tons of people hawking essential oils, homeopathy, herbs, colloidal silver, etc. as protection from coronavirus, often accompanied by dumb conspiracy theories.
