This can be applied to literally any kind of body modification, to ear, nose, and tongue piercings, tattoos, and the like. There are still lots of tribes all across the continent of Africa, for example, that still use scarification, both as a rite of passage and a way to mark an individual's identity -- a certain scar might mark one as being from a noble bloodline, or a reminder of ancestors past. All of that aside, that doesn't mean some jackass should get a tattoo of Tweetie Bird jerking off onto a Minion, nor should it be okay for someone to literally blind themselves by tattooing their goddamned eyes. Those aren't cultural markings, those are, for the most part, dumbass white folks who think permanent mutilation is a great way to make up for a lack of personality.

I've seen tattooed eyeballs on people that look really good but it seems like unless you're willing to spend A LOT of money to get it done by the dude who invented the procedure there's a very high chance you'll go blind.
