I have an older friend like that. He says he'd never vote for Sanders because of Sanders' push to forgive student loan debt. "I had to pay for my daughter's education so it's not fair if others don't have to pay for theirs. If they want to get rid of their debt then they should use the education they bought to get a higher paying job!"

He also brags about how his parents helped him lie on his first mortgage application in order to get financing for his first house. He's been able to build equity for decades as opposed to having to rent an apartment while struggling to save up for a down payment! To him, it's pure laziness that's the cause of millennials not being able to get a job that allows them to both pay off their student loans and to buy a house straight out of college.

My wife recently paid off one of her two student loans and now if anything I'm pushing harder for forgiveness because holy poo poo it's like the weight of a planet has been lifted off our shoulders, she was able to get out of credit card debt soon after and now we've actually started to build real savings after a decade of treading water, and "treading water" is still better than what most people buried in debt get to do.

It's been an absolute joy and a beacon of hope and I hope everyone gets to feel it in January 2021.

Student loan forgiveness doesn't go far enough, we also need to compensate the young people who chose not to go to college because they couldn't afford it. They deserve a lump sum payment to make up for the decades of wages being so much lower than the cost of living.

Yes, they do. And quite directly. Spouses as well. Basically if you are military, your base pay is X (determined by rank). A spouse is worth Y. A kid is worth Z.

Soldier (single): gets paid X.

Soldier (married): gets paid X + Y.

Soldier (married, three kids): gets paid X + Y + (Z * 3).

That is not how it works in the United States. Soldier or sailor or whatever branch (single without any dependents) gets paid X + Y, where X is basic pay and Y is tax-free housing money. Alternately, at certain (junior) ranks, they don't get paid Y but are given barracks housing.

Soldier with dependent(s) gets X + Y +Z where Z is a (somewhat) greater housing allowance than just Y. Often it's about a 15-30% bump in housing allowance over a military member without any dependents depending on location and rank.

There is no multiplier where you get more and more money for having more dependents, except that they all get government-provided medical care at no additional cost to the soldier. So a soldier with one kid or no kids and a spouse gets paid the same as a soldier with eight kids.

Yes, some junior soldiers will get married quickly just to move out of the barracks. Or to give someone medical coverage while operating in essentially a platonic relationship.

It sure does explain a lot of Tropes about marriage in the military. Enlisted men getting married to strippers, guys being cheated on while abroad, that one post on here where some dude is urging a lady to not marry a guy in the army.

I remember back in my China ESL days where one of my colleagues, a veteran who played in the Army band, would always call military wives "Step fords".
