I’m a physician in Portland. I have seen a few posts in this thread about people with loved ones with fever, etc. we are at a particular challenge right now this time of year. There are many, many cough and cold viruses going around. We have had at least 10 or more patients come in these past three nights alone who have a respiratory infection and concern us for coronavirus. But they unanimously test positive for some other respiratory virus, like metapneumovirus, rhinovirus, or one of the like ten other coronavirus species we test for. We use a pcr assay from swabbing their nose that gets results back within two hours, and no there is no crossreactivity in the test between the coronavirus species tested and covid19. We have not actually identified any other cases than the ones known on the news, all because we diagnose them with another culprit. My point is, it’s still very much cough and cold season, and while the concern for covid19 spreading is appropriately high, there’s a much significantly higher chance of having just a regular cold infection instead. Regardless, if you’re sick, practice self quarantine measures. Go to the local ER if you begin getting lightheaded or have chest pain or intolerable shortness of breath. If you’re not sick, follow the CDC’s rec’s and wash your hands often and don’t touch your face.

As a surgical technician I am upset to learn the masks we wear intraoperatively are only there to protect the patient. I mean the patients #1 and all that jazz but no wonder they had to test everyone in the room that one time for bovine tuberculosis. I'm in school again and the head of my program gives us two clinical absences every two semesters, with every subsequent absence resulting in deductions from the final grade. When a student was recently hospitalized for respiratory issues, his response was "don't get sick". USA #1!!!
