Pretty much. It's been a disadvantage of the Corbyn "moral socialism" approach - the members' beliefs have no real common foundation or analysis, just what they individually brought into it. So in a lot of cases it's just going to be "austerity bad because hurts people", and I mean, fair enough, but it doesn't seem to be enough to carry a movement against the currents pushing back on it.

Also, going to be interesting (and perhaps upsetting) to see if the US left has any more luck with enthusiastic, well-targeted grassroots activism vs. establishment media. Hopefully they do better than we did.

Wow the questions really are shockingly bad

quote:

Q1: To what extent do you agree or disagree that knowingly entering land without the
landowner’s permission should only be made a criminal offence if it is for the purpose of
residing on it?

The linked guide is definitely worth a read:

quote:

We strongly disagree that entering land without the landowner’s permission should
be made a criminal offence in any circumstances.
This Question is poorly framed. If respondents answer ‘strongly disagree’ or
‘disagree’ that could be interpreted as the respondent having the opinion that
trespass should be criminalised in all circumstances, not only when it is for the
purpose of residing on land.

You know how hard that is for people?

Which is why framing things in terms of progress is generally a good idea, because it allows people to say ‘that might have.been acceptable in the seventies, but these days we would hope things can be better’.

Unfortunately, most of leftist discourse has turned away from that strategy. Not entirely sure why; maybe just boredom with it due to overuse, or perhaps some kind of principled complaint about it not being entirely true

The proposal later on mentions reducing the number of vehicles required to define an encampment from 6 to 2 (a car towing a caravan counts as 2 vehicles) and suggests giving police power to seize any property belonging to someone found setting up such an encampment (or trespassing generally)

They won't do anything if my friend's experience is anything to go by. It's a sorry tale involving exploitation of the vulnerable elderly, 20+ repeated burglaries and the van traced as registered to an official traveller site. The police point blank told them they would do nothing because the perpetrators were travellers.

The Tory manifesto explicitly contained this promise

quote:

We will tackle unauthorised traveller camps. We will give the police new powers to arrest and seize the property and vehicles of trespassers who set up unauthorised encampments, in order to protect our communities. We will make intentional trespass a criminal offence, and we will also give councils greater powers within the planning system.

bolded in original

This makes it unlikely that the criminalisation mandate would be altered - it's hard to argue with general election victories - but that point on requiring the land owner's permission to expel unauthorized trespassers might have promise. There's a lot of absentee landowners out there in suburban England.

That noted, never respond to public consultations with a form response. You're just wasting your time. The interns processing the submissions can and are able to summarize % of responses as being linked to a single NGO. Personalized responses have much more value.

Voter suppression in America is wild. Communities with high poverty and minority voters are forced to wait for hours because the government actively closes down places to vote and holds back voting machines. Like, actively making sure there's warehouses of voting machines going unused. For the explicit purpose of disenfranchising anyone who might vote to improve the lives of the poor. They even admit that's why they do it.

Prestwick airport. Man that takes me back. When I travelled to Scotland I always uses to fly into Glasgow Prestwick. Ryanair stopped doing flights there around 2014/2015.

I think they were mostly using it for flying cargo, but I believe there was a air route to Poland that still flew through there. It was a grand little airport.

In other news Priti Patel is facing quite a large number of bullying allegations.

https://jrnl.ie/5032300

I am sure that if it was a criminal case where an accused had faced this many allegations, Patel would have already decided their guilt. And tried to push for the death penalty.

But since this is just workplace bullying, it's not a real thing and all the people making up these allegations are just doing it because they couldn't hack working with her. Or something.
