If you can get your hands on an old enterprise wifi AP that supports OpenWRT I recommend it. Good quality 5GHz network running at my place, while my neighbors are all busy making GBS threads up the 2GHz network.

yo you absolutely do not need to find enterprise IT stuff to have decent wifi at home nor do you need openWRT so please ignore this ridiculous advice.

I need to Ethernet up my computer somehow, haven’t had any issues with latency using it for gaming or whatever but the plex server seems to really hate talking between two devices running on wifi no matter what I do to the quality and transcoding settings.

I also gotta figure out a relatively cheap solution to relay internet to the brother in law’s caravan so he’ll gently caress off and actually start sleeping in it so I can set up my sewing room. He wants to just run an Ethernet cable through the yard for 50m and I keep telling him that probably isn’t happening even if we find a cable long enough and get the electrician to pipe it through with the 240v connection bc there’s no good cheap way to run wires from inside the house to outside

Ethernet over power. Not sure how well it will work over 50m, though.

If you've got to run a cable anyway for power get them to put an ethernet one in the same trench, you'll get better results.

like I said, there's not a good way to get the cable running out of the house from the router anyway. he's gonna have to live with a wifi solution one way or the other.

If you want to spend moderate on wifi and never worry about it again set up a Unifi AP. Don’t need to go their whole stack, Nano HD would be a good one or the AP AC Pro if you want to spend a bit less.

Edit: No commercial affiliation, I’ve run their stuff at home for the last 5 years and it has been good.

I think the short term solution is 100% every poo poo router I’ve had as a waypoint at any spare power points between here and there. In the longer term I’d like a better quality solution both for him and bc it will mean I’ll have more options for music in the yard and workshop if there’s good thorough coverage but the cost/benefit analysis outcome goal rn is ‘will this stream crunchy roll’ which I’m hoping I can do with a daisy chain

Your Computer: Ethernet over power or PowerlineAV, if you arent comfortable running your own cables under the house/thru the ceiling/walls. I have had good luck with Netgear, TP-Link devices. They are all standardised so you can intermingle Brands if you need to add more devices later (they will operate at the speed of the lowest speed device).

alternatively, Dual-band wifi may resolve the issue. if your router supports that, you put one device on the 5ghz band and the other on 2.4ghz and it gives you more bandwidth (2 devices sharing a single band effectively halves the bandwidth)

The other way you do it is get your plex server on an ethernet connection to the router. that leaves more bandwidth for the devices on the wifi.

Your BILs caravan - tell him to buy a 4G hotspot and gently caress off. if you're feeling charitable, Ethernet over power will work via whatever 240V connection he gets.

you absolutely can buy 50m+ pre-terminated Cat6 cables. Cat6 does Gigabit up to 100m in length, and after that its 100mbit. you would have to buy a box of cable and terminate it yourself beyond 50m I think (or the link below has custom lengths available too)

https://www.4cabling.com.au/cable/cat6-patch-leads/cat-6-ethernet-cables.html?cable_length=82

edit:

relays/repeaters/extenders, unless they have a ethernet backbone, halve the bandwidth each time they repeat it.

You dont need to dump huge coin into ubiquiti to get good wifi at home either. Basically any $200ish router with dual/tri band and gigabit ports will be a huge improvement over whatever piece of poo poo your ISP provides.

A UAP-AC-PRO is $215 if you don't wait for an eBay sale, and it's modular so if/when your NBN technology product gets changed you just swap to another router.

If I'm running off a 4g modem that does wifi can I connect a unifi to it and get better wifi throughout the apartment I'm in? It's an older brick joint so the walls are all solid brick and it struggles to get signal unless it's hard up against the road facing windows, but then that limits the wifi signal to the living room. I want essentially a network bridge somewhere near the centre of the house in the hallway that beams wifi signal into the other rooms at an acceptable quality level (i.e. getting 30-40 megabit internet connection as it should be)

BurgerQuest

If the 4G unit has an Ethernet port yes no problem to get a wireless bridge. If not you should look at repeaters or routers that can be a wifi router and access point at the same time.

I know I post a lot about digging holes itt but I really wish people would stop suggesting I dig a long rear end trench. Not only do I have to run past my septic piping but trenches are the singularly least satisfying form of hole to dig. No trench. This is both an ideological and a practical stance, you can’t change my mind.
