So this is I think the 5th mini I've ever painted. The first four all have pretty glaring errors, but I want to keep them for the future so I can look back and laugh at how bad I was/am. I've been super intimated to post because there are so many awesome painters here (this is more me being silly and scared for no particular reason, everyone is always so nice), but I figure that if I can get some direct c&c that it'd be more helpful than slamming my head against a wall trying out techniques willy-nilly. I went though the basic Reaper learn to paint box and then the first one in the "advanced techniques" box to learn some baseline skills coupled with watching a lot of mini painting YouTube and absorbing stuff through that via osmosis). It's the first time I've tried to put a color scheme together without just following what the instructions said for the "learn to paint" stuff. I think it turned out at least okay, I tried to drybrush some metallic onto the gun and spewed glitter all over the rest of the mini that I think I mostly managed to get off.

I know he needs to go on a base and that needs to be nice and good too -- I'm a big old newbie and that stuff is all in the mail right now so I can at least make it not hideous.

One thing I really want to work on is trying to get more color intensity (brightness?), I think the muted palette kind of works for the post-apocolyptic feel, but also was entirely an unintended consequence.

Looks drat good for a 5th mini ever! Whats in the mail for basing just out interest? You dont need much for an effective base, depending what scheme/setting you want to do.

Round bases (square bases being unacceptable is basically the only concrete mini-related opinion I've got formed) and Vallejo ground texture, I'll probably just do it some sort of brown and then go wander in the woods for scrubby looking tiny branches and rocks I can smash up to be more scale-appropriate and maybe go to the hobby shop and grab some wastelandy-looking tufts.

Sounds good! I find the basing process oddly rewarding myself. Slate breaks up pretty easily and makes a pretty good scale appropriate rock, and gravel tends to be a decent size without needing to be smashed. Never used any texture paste myself yet, but I've seen people get good results.

I have a strong preference for round bases myself, and I've grown to really like the lipped bases from the malifaux stuff I've been painting. I assumed the square base was mandated by whatever game the mini is from tbh!

Duncan has uploaded his first new painting guide on his channel and outside of slightly murky model lighting I have to say it's very reminiscent of his older WHTV guides with some extra details.

I've just bought myself a SoB army, so definitely looking forward to painting it this way - it seems managable, though 30 minutes per mini does seem a bit time consuming!

Looks pretty good! One thing to think about is defining changes in material with a dark line. Like a dark brown or black line between the jump suit and the pouches. The paint can be watered down a lot so that it pretty much bleeds into the corner. Dab the brush on a paper towel first so you don't get a big blob of water.

I think I remember my time as a kid where I spent like 5 minutes slopping paint onto things and not really colouring in the lines. I'm now trying to paint properly lol.

You underestimate how quick and lovely a 10 year old with mild ADHD can be.

Realistically though, how much time should I be expecting to spend painting a dude?

It honestly depends on the level of finish and experience you have but an hour per mini is a benchmark ive seen put about for tabletop ready. Which seems about right if youre batch painting a squad for example so the layers can dry in between (basic colouring, wash and highlight)

A space marine for me is 30-60 mins. More often than not on the 60 side once I go back and be fussy about getting the details. This is with airbrush basecoating which makes it a lot faster.

An aos ghost or similar is <5 mins per model or they're going in the bin. Just smash that paint on like I'm running a very unsafe factory.

I wrapped up a Seraphon Scar Veteran in like 3 or 4 hours over the weekend. About that much I think as I didn't keep track how much time I spent on basing and washing while the edge highlighting. drybrushing and some extra detail work took like an hour and a half.

I have ten space wolves terminators that I've been painting for what feels like a hundred hours over the course of a year and they're still unfinished. You've got to know when to call poo poo done.

I've been merrily smashing out painted models this year and worrying less about being perfect and I've been a lot happier painting. Getting dudes out and onto the table in great colour is what's important to me.

Thanks! It's not my design, a friend of mine offered to demo his 3d printer and I just googled something suitable to test. :)

It was printed in two pieces, top and bottom. The small guns of the midships broadside batteries didn't come out quite right, but apart from that there were only minor problems with the print. The model designer had pre-split the ship into about a dozen components for better print quality, but looking at these results it seems unnecessary. He printed up an Imperial Navy Dauntless light cruiser as well, in pieces, and that one is almost flawless.

The picture is a bit bad, but the only visible serration is on the swooping lines on the side of the prow.

I mostly finished two of the original cruisers yesterday as well:

Styx class heavy cruiser

Murder class cruiser

That Dauntless also turned out great. If your friend can do a full suite of escorts, you'll have tackled the biggest stumbling block of BSG (because you never had enough escorts).

I really hope the the rumors of BFG being worked on are true. I don’t care about titanicus, the fighter one, or black keep whatever or even necromunda, but I’d 100% be in on BFG. They should just copy the star wars armada rules though and maybe iterate and remove some of the fighter insanity, because that’s a great game and I really don’t trust GW to make better rules. I hear titanicus rules are great though, so maybe just start there.

Thanks, it's a kit bash. The base model is the stormcast character Neave Blacktalon. Then bits from 7 or 8 other kits. Most of them I had laying around but ordered the keys, cape, and shield.
And a little bit of sculpting.

Well, if you want the recipe for bleached pine:

Zandari dust (2 layers) over white primer, then ushabti bone (3 layers) then you could run a shade down the plank lines if you wanted it as planks!
