As weird as it sounds, I actually think a paler, almost olive-tinted grey works better as a base for bone, especially if you're going to use brown washes. I like Rakarth Flesh as a base, shading and glazing with Army Painter soft + strong tones. I think I picked that recipe up from David Soper, who has won a shitload of Golden Demons. I remember seeing his Ironjaw Megaboss and wanting to copy the way he did bone.

My copy of the Star Wars: Legion starter set arrived today and I painted up a test mini for my Stormtrooper scheme: I thought the Remnant Stormtroopers in The Mandalorian looked cool, so I went for some yellowed, old-looking armour and battle-damage.

Anyone got any tips for getting rid of spores on your masterson wet palette? I had a few from leaving my palette wet for a while so I washed everything and got a new sponge to be sure, yet I'm getting spores already with this new sponge so I assume the plastic case didn't get fully killed. Maybe soak in vinegar?

Much cheaper than a sponge, and can be thrown out and replaced regularly.

Adding a little hydrogen peroxide can help prevent mildew with a wet palette. A piece of copper at the bottom is also supposed to work.

I was using a takeout tray but switched it for a sandwich tub with wings on the lid that can lock it closed because the takeout tray wasnt as tight a fit as I would have liked, and it was drying out quite fast. Bought a pack of thin (like 5mm wide when dry) sponges and a roll of parchment paper and cut to fit. That works for me.

I splurged for one of these and it's been great so far, way nicer quality than the sta-wet and it's mold-resistant. Thanks! The white is actually mostly off-white blended up, so I started with a light grey undercoat, then basecoated the whole thing with Vallejo Deck Tan. Then I washed the model with a 1:1 mix of Citadel Seraphim Sepia and Lahmian Medium to get the yellowed effect in the recesses. After that I went back to the deck tan and mixed in increasing amounts of pure white while blending up to the tops of the armour sections where light would be most likely to hit. It’s all with a brush except for the undercoat; I don’t own an airbrush.

Painted some more Malifaux, am broadly pleased with how they turned out. Used a bunch of contrast paints to get a feel how they work over a zenithal undercoat.   Sonnia Criid. I'm pleased with how the cigarette looks, especially as I nearly cut it off when I thought it was a bit of flash.. The coat was GW contrasts with a few extra highlights. I could have cleaned up some of the splotches/pooling of the red a little, but I like the effect. Tried a blue contrast over silver for the flame on the blade, and it looks much brighter than the photo shows.  Mature Nephilim. Turns out if you want Magos Purple to show over any kind of dark undercoat at all you have to do a few coats. Kind of wish I'd gone for a cream coloured robe for a bit more contrast, but it is what it is.  Lelu. After the zenithal highlight I gave the face and torso a light drybrush of white (because his pecs have one hell of an overhang, and I was worried the red wouldnt show on the black), and then with the contrast over that it felt like it practically painted itself to be honest.  Black Blood Shaman. After lelu turned out well I did the same thing with the wings, a light white drybrush before a flesh contrast, and I'm pretty pleased with how that turned out. Was missing the blade when I got it, so thats greenstuff (my sculpting skills are non existent but even I can manage a rough blade shape).  Thats me painted all the Nephilim I have at the moment, though I'm not hugely happy with the leader (human sized woman with the sword in this picture). Painted her a while ago and I should have given the purples another pass to make them more vibrant, and her skin isnt great either. Having said that, she was an ebay purchase that was already assembled and I was partway into painting her before I realised that the seller had assembled her wrong (the trailing part of the coat had been attached to the shoulders as a cape, and a chunk of it had been cut off to make it fit), which wasnt ideal, so by the time I got to a stage that was at least passable I was fed up and called it done.

I know these are garbage pics but I was in a rush. Here is a rough color test for a scheme I'm trying out. I'm trying for light blue chased with dark grey, along with gold accents and some red features. I think it looks pretty good, but the big mistake is my final highlight color is much brighter than the base and midtones so try to imagine It with much better blending than I was willing to do for this test. The cloth is probably the best I've done to date but I need to get better at that, along with edge highlighting. The back of the backpack doesn't have the highest highlights so it's a good example of how bright the midtone is. The base is my first test combining cork, caulk and crackle paint, the caulk is definitely too soft even after several days so I'll try wall filler instead. I'm not so hot on the transition from cork to crackle so I'm considering either bringing the caulk up to the cork level and covering the whole thing with crackle paint or ditching the cork and just making uneven ground with caulk. Anyway I'm looking primarily asking for opinions and tips on the color scheme, but technique comments would be appreciated too.

With this talk about wet pallettes, that reminds me of when I was trying them out. Personally for what I'm doing I don't really need one, and I found it thinned my paint out too much (as I tend to lean towards stuff like Vallejo Air to begin with), but I found that a waterproof cell phone case (specifically this model from Walmart) worked like a charm. Thin enough where I'm not needing to reach into the container to get paint on my brush, lockable with both a watertight and airtight seal, and pretty durable plastic in case you travel with it or have kids/pets to deal with. Plus, between that and stuff from the dollar store (parchment paper, paper towels/sponges, probably some sort of anti-fungal liquid to mix with the water to avoid mold), you're looking maybe $10ish USD, so affordable as gently caress too.

Basically it's Vallejo texture over cork with walnut shells sprinkled in. Then wet blended Iraqi Sand, Dark Sand & Screaming Skull.

Can i use standard minifig paint to paint on Lego bricks? Lego is ABS plastic (afaik) so same as plastic minis (afaik!), but unlike minis Lego is very smooth and i will not be priming or base coating, so the paint might not stick? I just need a few white dots on a red surface, and instead of buying the Lego piece that already looks like what i want (and is super expensive) i figure i might as well put some paint on cheap generic pieces.
