My mom's an infection control nurse and is immunocompromised because she's a kidney transplant recipient. :stare:

I've seen conflicting reports about whether I should be horrified at this, because on the one hand, long-term lung damage from SARS/MERS seems to be caused by the immune system going ballistic, while on the other, this thing is hitting the elderly the hardest due to, well, weak immune systems. Is there a sweet spot where the immune system should be weak enough to avoid the lungs getting cytokine storm'd but not so weak that the person can actually fight off the virus, or what?

It definitely seems like trump's message pivoting from "there is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary occurring" to "we must fight this foreign virus" has had an impact on many of the people around me in middle America. They are able to now continue to be loyal to their orange god while taking some measure of precautions. Mentalities are shifting since there is a comfortable and familiar enemy to rally against (foreigners). Prior to this, I believe the cognitive dissonance that would have resulted from such actions would have overwhelmed the majority of them - if they were to acknowledge that danger existed, that would mean that trump was wrong about something...and if he was wrong about what thing, what else could he have been wrong about? That was far too great of a leap for the common American's identity to withstand. But now it does seem like things are happening. For instance, I am aware of one comically conservative boomer cancelling a birthday party that was scheduled for this weekend, citing "great risks" as the reason, which represents a large change from what I would have imagined happening even 24 hours ago.

There are certainly dire times ahead, but maybe there's some small chance we can avoid a worst-case scenario...

There's not enough information on that yet. I've been trying to keep track. Mostly I just know that the immune system going berserk has been successfully treated with HIV medications.

If she is a healthcare worker maybe she will get it early enough to still be treated before the hospitals get maxed out?

Let's get clean and smart

Dutch government had a press conference. Dutch is my second language so I may have missed a detail or two but the new rules are

1-Stay home if you have any symptoms.
2-Work from home if at all possible.
3-Museums, sports events, concerts, etc, are closed.
4-No gatherings of over 100 people
5-Schools are still open! This is because so many parents that are vital to health and public services need to have their kids to go somewhere, and that also kids don't suffer from it the way adults do.
6-Avoid contact with elderly and otherwise vulnerable people.

All in effect until March 31 at minimum.

There was 111 new cases today so we are up to 613.

Maybe! The hospital system she works for are such penny-pinching assholes, they literally uninstalled newer versions of MS Office and installed the oldest ones they could still get their hands on, and she has to use some command-line software that took forever to learn and takes longer to use (how much does that cost them in wage-hours?). So uh I'd be bowled over if the system is ready for anyone to show up with this loving thing (which they will, if they haven't already).

Hey guys this just like the flu it's nothing to worry about. The NBA gets cancelled every year. The national guard gets deployed in a quarantine zone in New York every year. The president makes a public address to the nation about the flu every year. I don't know why everyone is so concerned.

I’m really hoping Africa isn’t hit with this thing. For their sake, but also, if the virus doesn’t catch on there, it means the theory of this thing being seasonal might still hold up? Also, people who have everything in the world here get into actual fights over a loving roll of toilet paper, imagine what happens when already stripped to the bone supply lines of necessities in some African countries go down.

Probably not much? People who think they are safe panic more when their perceived safety is threatened than people who already knew they weren't safe. You get resigned to disaster when it happens often enough. If you've had to live your life aware of things like dysentery, cholera, AIDS, and loving ebola then BoomerFlu is, comparatively, not a huge deal.

"Wash your loving hands" doesn't require complex supply lines. And we've all seen the videos of africans just chilling while flies crawl around on their faces, if it's a competition those guys are world champions at "don't touch your face".

This is one disease where Africa may not be turbofucked more than the rest of the world. Still gonna suck, lots of dead grandmas, but maybe not suck worse than everywhere else for once.

So I manage a fairly large thrift store in a capitol city. We get our merch mostly through donations, either in store or through a charity we partner with. So it's retail sales where all the product is unwashed miscellaneous junk and clothes. Almost all of my 30+ staff are over 45.

I came in today and did my morning walk around asking my people what they thought.

"What?"
"What's a......Pandemonium?"
"I thought the president said it was just a bad cold...."

My employees who sort and price the incoming merch wear no PPE whatsoever. No masks, gloves, nothing. Neither do the cashiers that stock the goods. Our customer base is mainly the elderly, semi-homeless, and college students.

There has been no word at all from corporate regarding what they plan to do if things shift for the worst.

So how turbo-hosed am I?
