it's going to be a bit difficult saying all those people had to die and there was nothing we could do about it if e.g. Ireland or Norway manage to control the outbreak I'm so pissed off that they've essentially decided that hundreds of thousands of people can die and the rest of them can spend months on ends worrying about themselves and their loved ones for literally no loving reason the number already went down you fuckkerrs

There'll always be questions when it really hits, but this way they get to set the narrative in advance and give people some plucky britane talking points when the blame starts

 Since the government is absent, showing no sign of responsibility, usefulness or anything even approximating credibility it's time to suggest actual actions. 1. Declare an extended national holiday. 2. For the sake of argument it will last from Friday 13th March until Tuesday 31st March. 3. All economic activity ceases, it is a "total bank holiday". 4. All essential workers will be called to work and can if they so choose. When whatever is needed, you who make it or move it or maintain it will get the call. 7. For the duration of this holiday all such workers will be employed directly by the government and will continue to be paid plus a premium. 8. For the duration of this holiday all such workers will only be directed by the government. Commercial interests do not exist at this time. 9. All essential workers will continue to earn the premium after the holiday irrespective of the job and irrespective of the employer. All commercial property used during this time will be reimbursed as these organisations proved essential. They should now be considered national interests to be protected just like military ones.  10. We can all live with that, surely? Then we ditch Capitalism and institute a socially responsible economic model (as a blockchain, seriously) where there is no money, no debt, only your positive active creditable participation in society (credits) coupled with your sustainable frugality (credit rating).

This isn't austerity deaths that can be excused onto some other factor and can't be compared with other countries and their differing economies. This is tangible and universal.

So my university finally sent out a message stating that we should all prepare to teach remotely... after March 29, when spring break ends. It was mostly focused on how students will access lectures, discussions, and exams, but no mention was actually made of working from home in the mean time. So apparently they expect us to continue to come to campus and interact with each other in the lead up to what the government anticipates to be the worst phase of the infection.

I work for a very small company where work from home is pretty much impossible. There are two key staff members there (me and my boss), and the company literally would not be able to function without one of us. I know this because that's what happened last year when I missed a week and a half of work due to a (then apocalyptic) case of the flu. I ended up coming back to work close to a week before I should because the place was falling apart in my absence. The work Coronavirus contingency policy amounts to "Don't get sick".

Happy to report that they've retasked some of the cleaners at work to clean surfaces people are in contact with. Less happy that they're still not allowed to use any actual cleaning products so just rubbing a wet cloth on all the places people are most in contact with will probably have the opposite effect  Also I probably don't need to tell you but in the event your local chemist/supermarket has not removed the testers from their cosmetics stand please do not use them, or let your children use them, the little bastards love playing with them and they're a prime infection vector. The Coronavirus is interesting because it’s one of those very few phenomena that really do put us all on the same level. The virus does not care about absolutely any made up factor humans use to differentiate themselves, it only cares about physical susceptibility.
