40-70% of the US population will be infected over the next 12-18 months. After that level you can start to get herd immunity. Unlike flu this is entirely novel to humans, so there is no latent immunity in the global population.

[We used their numbers to work out a guesstimate of deaths— indicating about 1.5 million Americans may die. The panelists did not disagree with our estimate. This compares to seasonal flu’s average of 50K Americans per year. Assume 50% of US population, that’s 160M people infected. With 1% mortality rate that's 1.6M Americans die over the next 12-18 months.]

But yeah, if this thing doesn't go away late spring like the flu and people can get re-infected, a vaccine is the only hope.

I mentioned in the C-SPAM thread that this says it's only 2 days of symptomless contagiousness, rather than the like 5 people have been saying. Hopefully it is correct.

Yeah, I haven't seen anything solid. There was the Japanese tour guide who had it again IIRC, but wasnt that chalked up to the initial infection being present? I know it's probably too early to tell, but I'd like to know what's happening there.

IMO the incredibly irresponsible government response that led to millions of entirely needless deaths might end up being more of an issue than a funny Twitter hashtag.

Not surprising since almost all office workers in Norway now have to work from home.

I just got an email that the Dutch conference of Bishops have decided to cancel Sunday and Saturday services at least until April, which is a big deal because Catholics are morally obliged to go to Mass weekly unless they have a drat good excuse. For the last two weeks we were forbidden from touching during the sign of peace and you could only get the host in your hands but it looks like they are taking this much more seriously than they did their molesting priests.

People are hoarding food and poo poo and based on the admittedly appalling facts about the disease I'm not sure why when it takes a tiny minority of workers, not even like interacting much with each other, to grow and distribute food, and like if we should shut down beef probably one farmer can feed a thousand vegans.

No one answering the question they don't know the answer to?

Which is that herd immunity will eventually kick in. That, and there's already been vaccines developed for different strains of coronavirus that may be adaptable in a much shorter time frame than usual. People that know things are estimating that it'll prob take about a year and a half, if we're being generous.

Once that's done, tweaks can be made in the same way they're made to the annual flu vaccine, assuming COVID19 mutates as quickly. It might not.

My guess is that we'll see more novel viruses as climate change really kicks into gear. poo poo we weren't exposed to before bubbling up to the surface and making the leap to humans for any number of reasons. We'll probably have a better idea of how to monitor/handle it by then, and hopefully have an actual task force at the ready to perform all the necessary prep if another one comes down the pipeline.

That's a pretty optimistic view of things tho.

About that... we may have found a way to fight AIDS that work.

I think the positive news is that this virus is not completelly new, is similar to other virus that where already worked. We may have cool ways to fight this, even if is not a vacine or a validated vacine. Then the virus will not be has strong in 2021, since many people will have some level of immunity to it.
