It would be cool if there was some kind of home appliance that could preserve food items by freezing them. A "freezer", if you will.

I was at Meijer earlier to pick up a few items and there were maybe like five loaves of bread. Lots of buns though.

wasting freezer space on bread, of all things, is hilarious

Bread freezes well enough short-term, but you should still buy flour and yeast and plan to make your own bread because soon you'll be under lockdown with nothing to do for weeks on end and eating ready-to-eat bread from the freezer won't help the crippling boredom or monotony

I don’t think people would just shrug off 600+k deaths every flu season.

If we shrug off the 61,000 that die in the US flu season each year, why wouldn't we shrug off 610,000?

Especially if most of them were elderly retirees?

Pasta and bread are flying off the shelves as well. Some places are running low on beans and rice.

But again, this is just the store shelves, there's much more in warehouses and DCs and as long as the trucks keep moving the stores are fine.

Ok so there's still a million things, just fewer carbs and beans? That's pretty different from what I imagined when I read "food isn't on the shelf right now", misinterpretation on my part

It's a bit of an open question just how resilient these supply chains are now, because they're much more centralized now than they were 50 years ago, and much more dependent on being able to truck things across the country at a moment's notice. A lot of truckers or warehouse workers being out for a couple of weeks in the wrong place could result in odd disruptions, but probably not years of epic famine or anything
