My household of 4 is down to our last 4 rolls and I’m taking a poo poo as I type this. Seriously it's not loving norovirus. Meanwhile tissues and wet-wipes are fully stocked. I asked my brother if he had any N95 respirators just in case (he's a painter/handyman) and he thought I was joking. He thinks it's just an old person's problem and everything will be fine. And I have a buddy that's just acting like nothing is happening, head in the sand, doesn't want to talk about it. My dad and a bunch of my right wing Jeep buddies are busily posting all that nonsense. A few of them have suddenly realized poo poo is BAD, coincidentally within days of me and a few other former libertarians in the group pointing out that facts don't care about their feelings and numbers are in fact, facts, and that if they don't want to be a coin flip from burying their parents and aunts and uncles they need to take this seriously. But the lunatic fringe is still eating the bullshit up. If it was only them that would find a way to get the plague instead of bringing it to me and mine as well, I'd be less pessimistic about it, but this has me worried. I don't like being stuck on the same plague ship as a bunch of science-denying idiots who don't understand that everything everyone does affects everyone else, too.

N95 respirators aren't something for the general public to use anyway and do not fully protect you and can actually be dangerous in other ways. There are specific N95 respirator masks that are for medical use, but I doubt these are sold to the public? CDC recommendations. That being said, being in a country with 3rd world availability to heatlhcare like the US I understand that americans are worried. We had a specialist in infectious medicine as a consultant yesterday and we talked about the current situation and he basically said that it's serious, mainly due to the fact that so many people may need ICU care in a very short time and we need to spread those cases out as much as possible or we won't have enough capacity. We have restricted access for visitors at our hospital now. VVV: Being the US, I'd say the latter is more likely? MrOnBicycle fucked around with this message at 07:54 on Mar 14, 2020 |

A guy in my C&C group posted about getting stopped for running a stoplight. He claims he started fake coughing before the officer got to the window and the cop saw him hacking and turned around and left. While I don't believe it actually happened it did make me think that police will be less likely to interact with the public for fear of infection. So we're either going to see a lot of people get away with poo poo or a lot more people getting shot/tazed with no warning.

There was a good summary from a nurse somewhere on here that basically said N95 masks are mostly pointless (against pathogens) unless you find one in your size (and know what your size even is), have not a scrap of facial hair that could interfere with the seal, and go through some ridiculous process to make sure the seal is perfect. Oh, and the filters expire. e: ah, it was a tweet, and a doctor https://twitter.com/leorahorwitzmd/status/1235018922023440385 redgubbinz fucked around with this message at 18:51 on Mar 14, 2020 |

Krakkles posted:I’m pretty sure I’m going to regret asking this, but ... wtf, why? It's basically been covered, but basically what EMTALA does is ensure that everyone who seeks medical care gets at least a screening examination, regardless of ability to pay. (It also is intended to prevent dumping uninsured patients onto other facilities, and ensure stabilizing measures are undertaken prior to allowable transfers.) The rationale is that suspending EMTALA allows someone at the door to just turn people away for bullshit, as every person presenting with -- for example -- three months of wrist pain represents not only opportunity cost in terms of bed space, nursing care, and physician time, but also potentially exposes that person and all of their subsequent contacts to infectious disease. That's all well and good, and is both rational as well as ethical from the standpoint of preventing greater harm. But in reality, suspending EMTALA would definitely lead to some facilities pre-screening for capacity to pay and kicking the uninsured out, as well as finding ways to initiate inappropriate transfers also to benefit their bottom lines. If we see a rapid peak in severe cases, though, suspending EMTALA is not the worst we're going to see from this. The next few weeks will be critical, since two months of potential preparation time was wasted.
