I'm now on a 3-week forced vacation (temporarily laid off, so that we can apply for EI) just as catering was supposed to be ramping up for the season and I had a restaurant set to open in the next 4-6 weeks. Well, gently caress. I understand it, I know it's the right call, but gently caress does the timing suck for the business and gently caress do I not know what to do with myself for 3 weeks where I can't travel anywhere.

We almost certainly should shut down, as a casino that brings in multiple buses full of the elderly and infirm every day. We have not shut down and I would be surprised if we do, but we really really ought to. Luckily I have a couple weeks of pto banked even if we do close, we just had a pto buyout last week so a lot of people would be screwed.

Virginia Tech just told students "Y'know what? Take another week for spring break. Then all your classes are going to be online for the rest of the year. And hey, if you don't want to come back to campus, we'll refund your housing and dining money!" Basically "go home and stay home, wherever that is". This is absolutely going to cripple the local economy. They cancelled tomorrow's St Patrick's Day parade, which has every industry person downtown being all "fffffuuuuck" because that's an even bigger payday than Valentine's or Mother's Day. Plus the governor announced all K-12 schools in the entire state are straight up closed for the next 2 weeks. No school = parents having to take off time from work = no lunchtime business, and no one going out for dinner. Still no cases in my county, but state-wide it jumped from 11 to 30 overnight, and they're getting closer. It's just a matter of time before someone brings it here and things get turbofucked.

i'm in the midwest where a foot of snow is merely a challenge to yr ability to go out and do everything you'd usually do so ofc everyone thinks this is just like the flu and everyone is overreacting. y'know, to a global pandemic. restaurant is open for business as usual and there hasn't even been a suggestion otherwise. to-gos/delivery spiked on wednesday but has since calmed down. still did 150 covers friday but usually we'd do 200+ also there was a confirmed case at a building 2 blocks away, a building that is now closed until further notice. a land of contrasts...

Yeah, seems to be land of contrasts here, too. My husbands grocery officially ran out of TP this morning, yet my place right across the street texted me to make sure I'd be available for brunch tomorrow because "we can really use the help". Maybe they just booked a 12-top or something; maybe someone's freaking out about it and called out, I dunno.

Orlando theme parks are closed starting tomorrow, so we're seeing a mass exodus of people flying home right now. It's the busiest day we've had since christmas, and I am running with 2 cooks on a 6 person line due to call outs. Help.

I honestly didn't think this poo poo would be affecting everything so drastically but last night was more dead than our usual Monday nights. We cut one bartender, one floor guy, both cover/coat check guys (and took me off of security to close the cover/coat check). The street outside was dead too; my manager took a walk for coffee and said virtually all the other bars and restos on the way (except for a wicked Jamaican fusion place) were completely empty. Waiting on receiving the word from management that we're closing for a few days - LOL yeah right, our owners would stay open during a riot if they thought it would make a buck. It would be the responsible thing to do, though... If there's any place people could gather and very easily communicate disease, it's a loving arcade.

Because I live in a rural area, people are treating this like a free holiday and coming out in droves to get all hosed up. So far there have been no cases in our state that have been contracted from another resident, only from people who traveled out of state, and it's pretty clear that most people aren't taking it seriously. All of the high school activities have been cancelled, which affects out biggest weekend of the year (next weekend), but I'll be damned if the owner isn't determined to try and make as much of that profit as he can. I'm trying to decide at what point in the "poo poo's getting bad" progression I tell him I can't be convinced to come in.

No sports on right now and because our bartender was watching Harry Potter as they were cleaning, it's been left on for the rest of the night. The other TV has Family Feud.

The patient count is going down at the hospital, current count is just a few over 100. For perspective, 160-180 is our normal range, over 200 is busy. We didn't even do 350 tickets throughout the day. The count is liable to go down tomorrow still. Probably sending people home that *don't* need to stay to mitigate potential complications if anything comes to my part of Ohio. Which so far, it's mostly in the North East. We're expecting it to pick up though in a week or two. If anything comes up.

I realize this isn't helpful to everyone, but for those of you missing shifts now may be a good time to poke your head in over at SH/SC and look at some online courses. You may love it, you may hate it, but it may help you pay the bills during your downtime. I have a feeling this will be a serious rollercoaster for a lot of bars and restaurants. Best of luck to everyone in the industry folks. Sorry you're all experiencing this

We just suspended our salad bar and (minimal) buffet, which sucks for food cost but whatever, keeps filthy trucker hands off the produce. It's been increasingly slow for us but the Subway and Popeyes seem to be going strong. This was probably the slowest Saturday in months and happened to be the only one where we managed to be fully staffed, though, so we had actual downtime and it was weird. I made soft pretzel bites with beer cheese sauce in the back, don't judge me

You can apply for unemployment if your hours are reduced due to COVID19, if it's happening to you start applying now so you get your money before rent is due is 2 weeks. I've been hammering on my crew to do it
|
# ? Mar 15, 2020 08:14 |
|
As an add on to that a lot of unemployment applications have a 1 week waiting period before they actually start paying out so if you think you might need it apply now. You can always keep it on a continuing claim even if you're working. Here in DC even reduced hours will pay out a pro-rated claim if you're below a certain income threshold for the week. I usually end up starting a claim in December since our slow period starts then and keep it on a continuing claim until summer time. That way if a slow week sneaks in and I'm laid off I don't get stuck with a week of no income. Stay safe industry goons

oh good the 500-pound asthmatic that works second shift at the truck shop at my work might have the corona I know this because my husband is currently working a double to cover for him. I'm off until Tuesday but I await the coming chaos with bated breath. PS: if anyone remembers my story about the roof falling off in a storm back in October, it's now the 6-month anniversary and they're maybe halfway done with repairs. It smells like varnish in the kitchen three days a week and they finally fixed our heater (via the roof) just in time for the AC to continue to not work

local multi-vendor cafeteria just closed indefinitely, extremely popular spot. dunno if it's bc no one's going there or a proactive measure (or both!) but that's the first place to make that move saturday was slower than friday, which was slow-ish for a friday, but only by like 10 covers. the movie theater a block away is showing movies to nearly empty theaters idk maybe smtg will happen lol

They cancelled school here for at least two weeks, so a local deli is offering a free cheese, ham, or turkey sandwich to any student that receives free or reduced school lunch. Good people do exist in this industry, y'all. (and they're gonna be the busiest goddamn restaurant in the city with all the pr they're getting, deservedly so)

California’s governor has asked but not yet mandated that all bars close. He says restaurants are totally fine to stay open but they should halve their capacity to let people sit further apart. This was also not mandated. Basically nothing has changed, at least around me, because I know the local owners and they aren’t going to do poo poo until the law says they have to.
