Just watched Osmosis Jones for the first time since middle school. Pretty relevant really, down to the subplot of a doofus mayor downplaying the virus while attempting to get reelected.

I legit can't comprehend what's gonna happen in the next few weeks with the restaurants closing. Half my adult jobs, including my new one, have been in restaurants and 99% of people working in these jobs have absolutely no money to cushion for even a week or two, let alone a month or two.

Good time to get a job delivering though

The amount of people that will be 100% hosed by this is unfathomable.
And those businesses will never re-open if they're closed for half that long.

here in CA the governor made a similar announcement, all bars closed, except restaurants are apparently allowed to operate at 50% capacity as long as they seat everyone far apart which seems kind of dumb considering customers will still be interacting directly with servers and handing plates, cash, and credit cards back and forth etc. also everyone over 65 must stay home

my brother lives in brooklyn but i havent encouraged him to get out because the only place he could go really would be my elderly parents house in massachusetts, and would have to go through a place like penn station in order to get there which seems like that would put them at risk more than him staying there would put him at risk. plus he lives out in bay ridge which is probably a bit calmer than the rest of the city

Big cities can be tough places to be if things go bad. There could easily be hundreds of thousands of hospitality workers and others abruptly without employment. Roving gangs of fry cooks. :ohdear: But on the other hand NYC is unlikely to be left to fend for itself either. If things do go bad for a while, the government will pour more resources into stabilizing the big cities than smaller communities.

If things get serious for a little while it might be useful for your elderly parents to a healthy adult around to do the shopping and whatnot. Even a trip to the local supermarket can get a little harrowing these days as you claw your way through the crowds to get to the last pack of Charmin.

Could go either way.

It was in his address. IDK if there will be any real enforcement of it, but it was said.
https://variety.com/2020/biz/news/california-quarantine-governor-gavin-newsom-1203535032/

In a press conference held on Sunday afternoon, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that all restaurants will have their occupancy levels cut in half and all bars will be closed to stop the coronavirus spread.

"Newsom made the first announcement that all bars, night clubs, wineries and brew pubs are non-essential locations and will shut down. The Governor then stated that restaurants are a more “nuanced” issue and that the state doesn’t believe they require a total closure at this time. However, all restaurants’ occupancy levels will be cut in half, and patrons will be required so socially distance themselves in dining areas.

Further stressing social distancing, Newsom also urged that people over the age of 65 and people with chronic health issues stay indoors.

This message comes days after the governor banned all gatherings in California over 250 people. That being said, the governor did not address the closing of movie theaters in this announcement.

It’s gonna get real fuckin crazy when they stop all air travel in a week or less.
