I guess elections are when the rich caper and dance and make outlandish, comedic promises for the entertainment of the poor, and that is one of the strongest recommendations for democracy that I can think of. Where else can you see a billionaire heckled and have to take it?

I'd like some advice from China goons. One of our neighbours is from China, and they're having kids in a few months. They've invited us over for Chinese New Year previously, and we'd like to do something for them when the baby's born. Is there any Chinese "this is what you do when a friend/relative has a baby" tradition we could go of off?

I don't have a really good answer for you, when my gf's cousin had her last kid everyone just bought her baby clothes. A lot of her family is very traditional but for the baby thing there was nothing particularly different. You can buy the dad a pack of cigs, if he smokes one outside his door before coming back from work it'll keep ghosts from getting the baby.

Depending where they come from there are some traditions against making much of a fuss of a new baby in the first month. There's a fairly universal hundred days celebration for babies that's usually pretty big. If you gave them something nice around then, could be good.

You could say that about a lot of things, especially when it comes to some regional Chinese cuisine. Probably it comes down to how comfortable everyone around you looked while eating it.

d0s posted:Why is Korea such a haven for weird cult poo poo? Moonies, the president having a personal shaman, Shincheonji, all of North Korea. A lot of it has a heavy emphasis on getting huge groups of people together do do things in sync for whatever reason like moonie weddings, mass games, the shincheonji services, and extreme conformity (apparently like 95% of South Korean cars are black, white, or silver; or the way plastic surgery to make you look like everyone else is the norm). Is there any sociological type thing to read about this, it's kind of interesting to me. korean shamanism is an UNESCO recognized cultural heritage practice. to answer your question, Korea places a huge emphasis on social cohesion, which makes sense for a culture which has been sandwiched between world superpowers for most of it's pre-and-post colonial history. there's a word, Jeong, which doesn't translate, but references a kind of all-encompassing social unity which probably sounds kind of yellow panicky but I promise I'm not exaggerating. Jeong is the sum total of all your feelings, positive and negative, about anything. A person, a group, your country, it recognizes that even differences are something two parties share. anyway I've got PMs open now so if anyone wants to be a koreaboo/kortaku w/me, hit me up.
