Lol that in their desperation to avoid letting their awful untrustworthy workforce from skiving off they keep forcing you all into a room together until you all definitely infect each other and everyone gets to go home.

ya you want to read imperial london college's latest paper on their model: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf

quote:

In the (unlikely) absence of any control measures or spontaneous changes in individual behaviour, we would expect a peak in mortality (daily deaths) to occur after approximately 3 months (Figure 1A).

Imagine having the time to have played through 20 generations of one family in The Sims 2. Imagine making the original two members of that family Neil Buchanan and Cat Deeley. Imagine complaining to Maxis there was no technological progression. You've successfully imagined my life
So they are completely changing their strategy? What the gently caress. How was this all not obvious weeks ago?

Why would an ambulance be leaving the hospital?
Back from pharmacy shift! Not bad. No thermometers, sanitizer, liquid soap. But so far medicine supply is okay. Paracetamol stocks a bit low.

I am incredibly stupid
I mean thank god they're finally deciding to try and stop it (although half arsing a bunch of things) but yeah, why the gently caress was this not done two or more weeks ago, it has been so obvious for so long

even when they've been saying "we're four weeks behind Italy" they weren't loving doing anything to stop us being Italy in four weeks

it defies belief and I just hope they haven't left it far too late

So that's it then? We got the model wrong LOL!

The fact this is going to peak in June is not doing wonders for my mental health.

Not only is this going to be bad, it's only going to peak in three months. What the gently caress. I'm immunocompromised and I don't see how i'm going to avoid catching it and all the medical services are going to be hosed to at least June.

Tell me about it, I'm in the same boat (not super severely compromised but definitely at slightly higher risk than others) and thanks to all this my plans have been shot to pieces so from May I'm going to be without a flat, without an income, and with no immediate job in sight, in the middle of a pandemic. My partner is currently occupying a single room in a flat share so it looks like I'm going to have to move back in with the parents for a month or two at least, which I'm leery of given they're both >60. Oh, and I have to defend my PhD thesis in the second week of May too. You just have to laugh. Absolute loving state of this.

Everyone supports walling up a section of the population up in their homes indefinitely, apart from the people who'll be walled up indefinitely in their homes, study finds.

This just reminds me of the scene from Tramnsformers: The Movie where Astrotrain* says they have to jettison weight to reach Cybertron.

Starscream suggests survival of the fittest. All the Deceptions who are health vote for it. All the walking wounded pittly vote nay. And then are chucked out the airlock.

In less grim news over here in Ireland the government have brought forward measures to ensure anyone out of work can apply for emergency social welfare money to cover staying at home. As someone who is self employed it is a life saver.

*= Which bothered me. Why did a spaceship need to jettison weight. Guess Astrotrain was an Astrojerk.

I hunted the Orphan of Kos and all I got was this stupid t-shirt

all this unfolding has shook me awake from the general depressive gloom and now I’m just furious at the state of what we’re dealing with in this country. Anyway aside from my self indulgence, this little passage caught my eye in the paper:

“Technology - such as mobile phone apps that track an individual’s interactions with other people in society - might allow such a policy to be more effective and scalable if the associated privacy concerns can be overcome”

I get that they’re just hypothesising but lol at the idea of giving this government that kind of access to your phone
