There doesn't seem to be much, if any clarity on at what point people are at risk of death. Surely a lot of people are going to catch this and most will just have to wait it out at home and get over it, when it comes down to that I'm sure a lot of people won't even be seen by doctors, so at what point does someone go from "I need to wait this out" and "I need to be in a hospital immediately"?

Here's my understanding from a brief skim. They modeled (in the US and UK) various non-pharmaceutical interventions to try to reduce deaths (i.e. various methods of isolation and quarantine)

https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf

There are two key graphics in this. The first illustrates various mitigation strategies, which are defined as follows

The second illustrates suppression strategies:

Both graphics assume each scenario considered is implemented for THREE MONTHS. Notice how the most effective strategies in the next 3 months, the Orange or Green scenarios, result in a huge rebound after the three month period is over.

We are going to have to socially distance until a vaccine can be developed, potentially 12-18 months. From the Discussion section of the report:

Let me repeat that

:siren: To avoid a rebound in transmission, these policies will need to be maintained until large stocks of vaccine are available to immunise the population – which could be 18 months or more :siren:

If you can't breathe properly you go to the hospital and just hope there's some oxygen / a ventilator for you.

There are at least two reports of people being diagnosed, recovering, then getting infected again.

I don't know what that means exactly, but it's scary.

Likely related to faulty testing until we get more info.

It doesnt seem to mean much at this stage. Could be due to screw ups or anomalies, this could be unlike any other illness. From my understanding, it's too early to tell, but it doesnt appear to be the case that it's some kind of infinitely recurring illness in anywhere near each and every case. But definitely a sobering thought.

There are a lot more than 2 reports of that. There are rare individuals who have gone through a full infection cycle, including testing negative multiple times, and then fallen ill again and tested positive. It seems rare and I haven't seen publications pinning down the rate at which this occurs

One published theory is that the antibodies these individuals produced weren't long-lived enough to prevent a second infection, which apparently occurs in other coronavirus infections as well. Similar to how the flu vaccine can lessen symptoms even if it fails to confer immunity, often these individuals are having less severe symptoms the second time.

It is definitely not just faulty testing, that's been ruled out in both a diagnostic and statistical sense.

He got tested because he had known exposure to someone who tested positive. Most countries are actively looking for carriers instead of pretending like you can only catch this thing in China

I absorbed an interview somewhere (NPR maybe?) in the last 2 months about how this is a feature of the coronavirus family, that for whatever reason the body doesn't always make enough antibodies the first time to prevent reinfection e: and the point was made that it's far too early to know where this specific coronavirus falls on the continuum
