Yes, as another eurogoon: please vote against Donald Trump. poo poo affects the rest of the world. Just his withdrawal from the climate accords hugely undermines global response to climate change. And I can't imagine any democrat would've broken up Obama'sIran agreement, reigniting a loving nuclear arms race in the middle east.

Another thing, in D&D you see a lot of the argument that if Biden wins another worse fascist will just use trumps play book to win afterwards. And I don't get why they are so confident in their predictions, I don't trust nostradamuses. Win the fight you've got right now first maybe.

I don't think it's gonna be hilarious. Mostly because the last four years of Trump have not been "hilarious", and four more years of him are going to be substantially less "hilarious".

With the current state of the rhetoric, I'm starting to entirely lose hope that your country will manage to not gently caress this up in November.
I went on an on like a broken record over the last couple of years about how I believe that voting - especially in times like these - is a civic duty, or how I think that the primaries going on an on with voters literally being financially invested into their candidate of choice is not a good thing.

Something like just over a year ago, even in here the rough consensus was that people would - grudgingly, but ultimately - vote for the democratic candidate in the general election. I'm getting the feeling that this notion has already fallen apart substantially, and coupled with the notion that I keep seeing the sentiment (also in here, but predominantly on social media) that voting for Biden is voting for the "status quo" (which, with the status quo being Donald Trump in office, is just :psypop:).

I just feel really, really loving bad for the minority groups in the US, and poor countries around the world that will be turbofucked by four more years of Trump, when privileged folks give this away and pass on damage-controlling their 2016 gently caress-up yet again.

Hard agree with all of this.

Moment magnitude isn't as important as damage. Moment magnitude just tells you how much energy was released. An intensity scale tells you how much the ground shook. This is affected by things like the characteristics of the local bedrock.

Mercalli intensity is way more useful for the common man than Richter magnitude. It is less directly quantifiable, but is better at answering "are people's houses ok". The perceived shaking and predicted damage rows of the table from USGS in the link above are probably from some version of or something like a modified Mercalli scale.

There are so many factors involved, though. Local bedrock geology and surface geomorphology, yes, but also local building codes and so forth.

On my active tectonics field course, we went to look at a little neighborhood of ruins by Springdale, UT that was flattened by the St. George earthquake in 1992. It had roughly the same middling intensity as this morning's SLC quake, but flattened a bunch of houses 50 miles away because they were built right next to a hillslope that contained a layer of gypsum about 50cm thick -- some of the material overlying that relatively squishy gypsum just kinda sloughed right off and destroyed all those Zion NP vacation houses. Buildings a quarter mile away or on the other side of the highway were fine.

Edit: i should explain that the Mercalli describes an earthquake in terms of "knocks poo poo off of your shelves" or "breaks parts of your house" or "kills everyone in Seattle" rather than numbers that are largely meaningless to non-seismologists or -tectonicists

I heard on NPR that net neutrality advocates are monitoring the huge upswing in data use now that so many folks are working from home and streaming entertainment. They said since most major carriers in the US have lifted data caps due to the crisis and the system hasn't melted down due to "congestion", basically the companies are full of poo poo.
