Coasterphreak posted:Our produce supplier here in NC has cut to M/W/F, we'll see if Sysco shows up tomorrow lol Y'know, on reflection, maybe that was a dumb question, at least about Sysco. Do they distribute to all these supermarkets getting pounded, or just restaurant industry? I mean, it's not like supermarkets are carrying 1 gallon jugs of Sysco-branded heavy-duty mayonnaise or 5 gallon buckets of lard. Now US Foods, that's one of the minor suppliers to my man's store. They have a distro right here, one of two in VA. I've worked in a bunch of places where we've had the luxury of saying "whoops, we're almost outta chicken, gonna run up to US Foods, back in a minute!" I'll be curious to see if they come through tomorrow. Idk, I know jack-poo poo about how that sort of food distribution works. If anyone has more info, I'm curious! Hell, an A/T on the subject would probably be wildly popular right now. fake edit: and duh, me, did you think to apply there? 99% of the jobs open are drivers, no shock there, but they do have a position I'm qualified for (recoup; basically looking at stuff that gets sent back and determining whether it's safe to re-box and put on the shelves because it was a mis-pick, or "oh hell no that's nasty" and tosses it).

work at a grocery store, we've had 2 perishable trucks be delayed with no time table given for their arrival. currently we have 3 skids of product missing from our last dairy order, they must be wildly roaming out there somewhere in the US of A. it was probably intercepted by a horde of frenzied shoppers seeking butter and eggs. RIP to the driver who was surely beaten to death, the unfortunate recipient of their anger

And funny enough, I was thinking about you yesterday while hanging out with my roommate's bro, who suggested the company that handles food service for the local hospitals "because they still need cooks, right?" We have two major hospitals, plus all the retirement homes scattered about. My question: Um, do those kinds of places piss test? I don't smoke a ton of weed (hell, I can't afford it anymore), but I might pop positive. This is VA, where we still don't have MMJ, let alone Colorado-type "woo, weed for all!" laws. Just so glad my husband is in the grocery store biz, which still falls under the umbrella of "essential personnel". Based on that, I also sent out apps to every Kroger in a 15 mile radius. Surely they need some grunts to offload the trucks --- oh, wait, the non-existent trucks. JacquelineDempsey fucked around with this message at 20:14 on Mar 18, 2020 |

I've never been happier to be a short-order cook at a truck stop, we're hopefully going to be considered essential services and won't be forced to close even if Texas shuts down. I've still got 40 hours this week, but we're cutting things like the 16hr/week dishwasher and the salad bar in its entirety, and we're down to one server at a time. We've still got a steady trickle of business but it's mostly truckers, we haven't had the families and random old people we usually get.

Very fortunate: Takeout/delivery business so far is about 65% as good as our normal dine in, which should be enough to keep the lights on and people paid. Not fortunate: One of my two prep cooks quit(!), and the other got her car totaled the same week "some bad family poo poo went down" and won't be in for the near future. My adjusted 6 hour days look like they'll be 10-12 to keep up by myself. If business stays okay through next week and the other cook stays out, then we'll think about hiring someone...

Yes except that most of our customers are the doctors and nurses and most of them have to undergo rigorous sanitation procedures if they exit the building on their lunch break. The restriction is literally designed to discourage people from ordering delivery and just bring their lunch from home.

To me it seems like the UK are among the few countries doing the sensible thing by listening to their chief medical expert and virologists, not reacting to whatever the public wants them to do. There’s press conferences with the PM and representatives from NHS daily talking about their plans, why they have those plans, calmly laying out info to the public. To me it really seems like they have a solid plan to combat this as well as they can under the circumstances. I'm being told by the owners (not management) that in MA that some signed order has cut the ban from April 17th to April 6th, 'unless further extended'. Which seems dangerous to me, unless I've missed some important news? They're even talking about bringing employees in a few days early to prep, which seems really fuckin' dangerous!
