Mum's a nurse. She got a survey that pretended to be about training needs. It asked which areas of nursing she felt confident practicing in. The survey's veil tore down at the point where each question corresponded exactly to each of the major wards in the county's largest hospital. Respiratory health, orthapedics, cardiovascular health, etc

From local primary school (Flintshire): Front line key workers are: 1. Medical professionals including doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, etc. 2. Other health workers such as employment in a healthcare setting 3. Police force and fire brigade 4. Education - teachers, classroom support staff, cleaners, caretakers, etc. 5. Workers in childcare/early years 6. Social care workers 7. Council staff in key roles, e.g. drivers, school escorts, catering staff, etc. Might be different in England though. Edit to add: Letter also says the local authority will be designating a local hub where childcare will happen, so it won't be all schools staying open TwoShanks fucked around with this message at 23:05 on Mar 19, 2020 |

You seem to have quite a few contacts in the "everything's perfectly fine" crowd. It'll be interesting to see when or if their attitudes change! We've more or less completely shifted our team to working at home. In some cases this has involved chucking workstations in a car and taking it round to people's houses. That would have seemed unthinkably drastic on Monday, back when all this was a joke.

Communication sent home first thing this morning with a list of suspected key worker jobs. Asked parents to respond saying if they fit under any of those categories. 2. Staff with underlying health conditions were spoken to and told to stay home for 12 weeks. 3. While the children of key workers can come to school, it's a parent's right to keep them at home instead. 4. All teachers and support staff will be in on Monday and see how many students there are. Based on numbers, a rota will be made to decide what days we are required in school and when we can work from home. 5. Heads of local primary schools have been in touch. We can choose to volunteer to go to assist at a primary school that needs help instead of going to our school. Obviously being a secondary school we have a larger number of staff so can help the small primary schools. 6. While there is talk about how children will need supervising over Easter, the head assured us that they are looking at how to provide that and we would not be required to come in. If we wanted to volunteer it would be welcome. 7. We will definitely look after those we need to. We are however not a babysitting service. Key workers and vulnerable children only. Like how the toilet paper panic pandemic spread from HK to Australia to the USA to the UK just through reporting "there are people buying lots of toilet paper" and the rest is the madness of crowds. Guy in the shop today was saying there's three toilet paper factories in the county alone (Leicester Tissue Company, Natsons, and Sofidel) and yet people are still panic buying. One thing I did see was that literally all the toilet paper was a brand I had never seen before so I guess what might be happening is those companies are diverting stock that would have gone to other markets to local retailers.

This means that you can get symptoms from all kinds of stuff.

So, uh. This morning:quote:UNITED NATIONS: Nearly 25 million jobs could be lost worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, but an internationally coordinated policy response can help lower the impact on global unemployment, according to a UN agency. This afternoon: https://twitter.com/surveyusa/status/1240739373756436481?s=20 quote:The Irish government has said 400,000 out of a workforce of 2.3m could lose their jobs as a result of the coronavirus crisis, the Irish Times reports. These numbers seem to rather higher than the initial estimates. Proportionally if we end up like Ireland that's 4.6 million jobs lost from our 26.5 million permanent employees. Before we even start thinking about the self employed or gig economised. This has a real possibility of turning into a wartime 'sign up to help if you want to be fed' draft type of clusterfuck. No then there will just be a run on chest freezers. (I hope this is accurate, otherwise my larder is going to get super squeaky over the next couple of weeks. I'm already planning to take time out of my normal work hours to go shopping so I'm not going at like 2 in the afternoon after the vultures have descended. On another note, care troubles became substantially more urgent today when, after driving across town to a dealership in my slightly benighted clanker, when I got back into my estate a chunk of galvanised something-or-other fell off the underside of the car somewhere. Which is concerning, but at least it happened in a quiet estate instead of on a main road. Does mean I definitely don't trust driving it anywhere except maybe to part-ex it though. E: I'd be pretty surprised if the issues with supply aren't with delivery thoguh. There are only so many lorries and depots, and the traffic around the depots is often suuuuuuuper lovely, because they just kind of slap them into the countryside without actually considering the thousand extra lorries a day they'll be shunting out onto the nearby roads.
