Turns out "schools shut" actually means "schools open much more than before".

The guardian has leaked a list which is

-Doctors
-Nurses
-NHS staff
-Police
-Fire
-Armed Services
-Social Workers
-Highways workers (?)
-Delivery drivers
-Supermarket and shop workers
-Teachers
-TAs

If any 1 parent falls into that category the child has to carry on going to school.

At the moment, it's just facebook names and I guess if the schools want to take us up, they'll decide how to get our real info.

Someone also set up a group for local people able to offer tutoring (online) too (the unwritten assumption being that it will be probably be free or very low cost for the duration).

From local primary school (Flintshire):
Front line key workers are:
1. Medical professionals including doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, etc.
2. Other health workers such as employment in a healthcare setting
3. Police force and fire brigade
4. Education - teachers, classroom support staff, cleaners, caretakers, etc.
5. Workers in childcare/early years
6. Social care workers
7. Council staff in key roles, e.g. drivers, school escorts, catering staff, etc.

Might be different in England though.

Edit to add:
Letter also says the local authority will be designating a local hub where childcare will happen, so it won't be all schools staying open

Interesting to hear. At my secondary school...

1. Communication sent home first thing this morning with a list of suspected key worker jobs. Asked parents to respond saying if they fit under any of those categories.
2. Staff with underlying health conditions were spoken to and told to stay home for 12 weeks.
3. While the children of key workers can come to school, it's a parent's right to keep them at home instead.
4. All teachers and support staff will be in on Monday and see how many students there are. Based on numbers, a rota will be made to decide what days we are required in school and when we can work from home.
5. Heads of local primary schools have been in touch. We can choose to volunteer to go to assist at a primary school that needs help instead of going to our school. Obviously being a secondary school we have a larger number of staff so can help the small primary schools.
6. While there is talk about how children will need supervising over Easter, the head assured us that they are looking at how to provide that and we would not be required to come in. If we wanted to volunteer it would be welcome.
7. We will definitely look after those we need to. We are however not a babysitting service. Key workers and vulnerable children only.

*Tubed up and mostly unconscious. She didn't like it because you're mostly just making sure that the machines continue to go ping rather than dealing with people as people, though she said that at least she was on a ward where they were generally expected to get better rather than worse.

Our local 4x4 rescue/mudding group has red and blue lights and powers to direct traffic.

They're not supposed to have the first and they only have the second through "common person in an emergency" but they've pulled so many cop vehicles out of ditches in the countryside that there's an unwritten understanding as long as they don't pretend to be real police/fire.

Yeah we had that email but it definitely didn't mention shop workers and stuff like that and it said if ordinarily losing childcare would mean you had to take a day off. Which is a bit different from what looks much more generous saying anyone with one parent in any qualifying category counts straight away.

That's how panic buying works though.

Like how the toilet paper panic pandemic spread from HK to Australia to the USA to the UK just through reporting "there are people buying lots of toilet paper" and the rest is the madness of crowds.

Guy in the shop today was saying there's three toilet paper factories in the county alone (Leicester Tissue Company, Natsons, and Sofidel) and yet people are still panic buying.

One thing I did see was that literally all the toilet paper was a brand I had never seen before so I guess what might be happening is those companies are diverting stock that would have gone to other markets to local retailers.

Yeah - it's kind of dangerous to rule out covid-19 due to a specific symptom, typically a viral infection occupies the immune system and as such the disease usually comes with an additional bacterial infection. This means that you can get symptoms from all kinds of stuff.

(I hope this is accurate, otherwise my larder is going to get super squeaky over the next couple of weeks. I'm already planning to take time out of my normal work hours to go shopping so I'm not going at like 2 in the afternoon after the vultures have descended.

On another note, care troubles became substantially more urgent today when, after driving across town to a dealership in my slightly benighted clanker, when I got back into my estate a chunk of galvanised something-or-other fell off the underside of the car somewhere.

Which is concerning, but at least it happened in a quiet estate instead of on a main road.

Does mean I definitely don't trust driving it anywhere except maybe to part-ex it though.

E: I'd be pretty surprised if the issues with supply aren't with delivery thoguh. There are only so many lorries and depots, and the traffic around the depots is often suuuuuuuper lovely, because they just kind of slap them into the countryside without actually considering the thousand extra lorries a day they'll be shunting out onto the nearby roads.
