Cugel the Clever posted:Though a lot of it is surely due to underfunding that C-levels deserve blame for, I've always been surprised at just how stagnant some folks who work in tech get: "We don't need to learn and implement X, because it doesn't fit our users' past use cases and it'll probably just be superseded eventually anyways, so we should just stick with the expectations we set twenty years ago." That is a very accurate description of our IT department. In this case, they've cited two problems: 1) we don't have the hardware - my coworker and I both have old desktops that we are perfectly happy to format and hand over to them. 2) we don't know what to do with the hardware - bullshit, they've been wiping drives and formatting them to corporate specs for the past half a year. 3) we don't know how to reliably forward the phone lines to cell phones - some legitimate merit to this, but every time phones come up they act like it's too arcane and unknowable to untangle, so they just give up before they've even started. That, and it's the latest in a long line of goalposts, see: points 1 and 2. I should note that IT has been promising us that they'd work on ways to help is WFH for months now, just due to staffing shortages. They're out of excuses when it comes to researching this problem. And yeah I'm sure more than a few of them are paid the same kind of poo poo wages we are, but we as a department (dispatch) are never seen as critical until something like this happens and everyone's like 'oh yeah these guys are critical.' It's infuriating. Old Boot fucked around with this message at 08:38 on Mar 20, 2020 |

I could make and receive phone calls using my desk phone's number, access my voice mail, etc. I think my ADSL was 256K, but the quality was good enough, and I don't think people even knew I wasn't in the office. I think this was probably pretty bleeding edge back then, but I think that by now it ought to be pretty doable I suppose a phone system is the kind of thing you might not upgrade for decades though, and.. quote:I should note that IT has been promising us that they'd work on ways to help is WFH for months now, just due to staffing shortages. ..the cynic in me says that planning for future emergencies that may or may not happen doesn't deliver value to shareholders today, so how could you justify it? e: vvv Yeah, to be fair, I've worked places where IT wanted to change things just for the sake of playing with something new, and it wouldn't have delivered any positive outcomes for any of the users (definitely some negative ones though). A big part of ITIL is drilling it into the IT guys head how important it is to deliver value to the shareholders. When someone in the IT department comes up with a good idea it usually gets turned down until they stop coming up with good ideas.

Is D&D leaking again? The cash payments didn't work for bush and the Republicans are busy trying to screw up the payments as badly as possible. Read the news. In addition, things are gonna get a whole lot worse in the coming weeks. Don't start doom-jacking now.

Chichevache posted:This is pretty reductionist. I could just as easily say that not voting against Trump amounts to endorsing white supremacist fascism and concentration camps. Oh look, you've discovered the DNC's 2016 GOTV strategy. To be a little more constructive, let's look at AOC and Bernie. After AOC was elected the Party stated that any candidate trying to primary an incumbent from the left would not have the support of the Party. The Party also engineered the defeat of Sanders in this primary. While I obviously wanted Sanders to win, I would be much more accepting of his defeat if it had been a result of a fair process. As it was, the Party threw its support behind Biden and essentially picked a winner, much as they did in 2016. At that point, why pretend that the Democratic Party is any other than a club for people who enjoy being in power and will only look out for those in that circle, as opposed to an organization to facilitate the political desires of the American people?
