Goddamn me for laughing at a meme picture, we shouldn't have those here. But it's still drat funny.

I fear Shen's Last Gift doesn't play nice with the fatigue mechanic. Sure, two of the characters with it don't really interact with it in two different ways, but that's only part of the party. You'll get combat phobias out the rear end on most of your team if you do SLG. Which is a shame, it's a great mission.

Eeeh, it works fine. IIRC nobody I sent on the mission got phobias as they where healthy when they went it, they just had to sit chilling for a few weeks afterwards digesting all that delicious xp. Julian is such a treasure and should not be missed, I had a good belly laugh at his "Exactly how much ammo did you guys bring?" comment.

Yeah I've seen people warn about Shen's Last Gift, but frankly I think if there ever were actual fatigue issues with it then they've been patched out. I've never had a soldier get a phobia from that DLC, and I don't do anything in particular to prevent it. Don't send in fatigued soldiers and you'll be fine.

Basically play with the DLC enabled until you get bored of it, then integrate.

There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

Early in the game, don't feel pressured to kill the Chosen when you meet them. The first time you meet them they will always extract knowledge from a dazed soldier rather than kidnap them, and maybe the second time, too. So, if you roll a bad set of traits for them the first retaliation mission you have, forego the 5 Ability Points for killing them and the perfect map clear. Better one soldier in the sick bay, at worst, than a full wipe.

Ok rate my setup here and let me know if you suggest anything. This will be my first run through of Xcom2 (including WoTC). The performance of the game on release turned me off so I never got far into it. I played probably 250 hours of Xcom1. Most of the mods are just WoTC version of what I used at release.

Mods:
Instant Avenger Menus
Stop Wasting my Time
Show Health Values
Cost Based Ability Colors

Difficulty/Setup
Veteran (should i bump up to Commander due to so much Xcom1 experience?)
All DLC enabled
Integrated DLC set to OFF so I can play the DLC story missions I've never seen

Get some accessory mods -busb is the only one I need but there’s also a couple of cool camo mods. Evac all, quick avenger menus, stop wasting my time, all good

There was a must-have mod that showed targets available at a hovered over spot so you wouldn’t move then get screwed because a tree was wider than you thought. Does that still exist or did they make it part of the core ui?

Go commander - if you suffer too much you can tone it down but if you are good at xcom 1 on the second hardest difficulty adjusting to the new mechanics on commander will be challenging but rewarding

Free Camera Rotation is one of the best mods, the main thing is it just lets you rotate by 45 degrees. It's especially nice on all the city maps with tall buildings since you can look directly down the streets instead of having to always swivel the camera all over to figure out where all the transparent walls are

I actually use it for the Tac Mask more than berets. I do have some characters with a beret, but not as many as the Tac Mask.

Coming to the end of my first playthrough and I gotta say that psy troops are the bee's knees. Of the two specialist I found the hacker tree to be more useful, I am sure at higher difficulties the medic is probably more needed. All 3 of the hero classes were fun and useful. Double claymores topped with a blaster cannon shot basically turned anything into a puddle. Sniper, as always, is a great addition to any team regardless of build. I found that Rangers fell into two categories: double shot or reaper. Both of which had their uses and both of which are great. The grenadier was fun, their ability to strip armor was useful throughout the the game. Not disliking any class really made the game a blast to play.

The Tac Mask from Capn Busb's pack is absolutely necessary. Templars MUST have buzzed hair with a slight shadow, tac mask, and potentially the face paint that paints the entire top black, along with black outfits, to ensure they look like otherworldly warriors. Templar helmets stink, tac masks make them look awesome.

Also make sure you use reaper hoods but not the actual face masks for maximum effect.

I would but in order to keep them completely out you have to uninstall it.

If you enable (but don't integrate, if you have WotC), then you can avoid fighting the rulers by just not doing the Nest mission.

If you have it installed but disabled, you get a real :xcom: move of the rulers just showing up by themselves uninvited.

By the time they show up you should have a few good tools to deal with them. Generally a good Talon Round assault with rapid fire can do enough damage in one hit to make them split. I've not had much trouble with them outside of the first time I ever encountered them, you just gotta be smart. The game straight up tells you when you're going to run into one the first time so, assuming you can keep the Avatar timer down hard enough, you can avoid the base assault missions for long enough to make them beatable (this is with it integrated). If not, and you have to assault one, the first base you found should be where the Viper Queen is, who will hurt but is relatively easy. Bring battle scanners and find the ruler, sneak up concealed, then open up with a massive overwatch salvo!

The next times they show up are fun "oh crap" moments but they've already lost health, sure you might get some injuries, but ride it out as your soldiers desperately blast away at the charging Berserker, it's fun!

So, I've been doing a campaign focusing largely on soldiers contributed to my barracks by my friends from WoW in the form of their WoW characters translated over to the different setting/genre, mixed in with a few of my own soldiers for good measure... and to keep them out of trouble. Or at least attempt to.

There's been a running gag developing that one of them, Ephrius "Lucifur" Hornetstaff just, for some reason has a coffin that he keeps bringing along to missions. Meanwhile, my Sniper had a bafflingly poor performance streak for several days worth of missions, culminating in this poster being made:

Last night, however... the Redemption Arc was real. He started hitting shots. He started hitting unlikely shots. He even got kills! In celebration, we decided that Jerrod's time in the Forever Box imbued him with competence. And thus, I created the second poster in this little mini-saga to commemorate it.

As an unrelated aside: The "Gateway Battle" from Fireborn's mission pack, combined with a Templar Incursion squad from the Resistance Incursions mod made for a hilarious mission. Between the Resistance troops inherent to the Gateway Battle mission, plus the Templar Squad, they actually took down an Armored Berserker from full health to dead on one turn, all on their own. I was so proud. Even if I did need to scrape my demolitionist off the floor after said Armored Berserker's Bull Rush K.O'd him. EDIT: Best part, one of the Templars had bladestorm, and another one had Fortress, leading to him dancing around in the Bio Viper's acid blood and not giving a single gently caress.

One thing to remember is that Alien Rulers only react to soldier actions that they can see. So for example if you fire a grenade from out of their view, they won't react even if you hit them. They also don't react to free actions, like the Axe Throw. Finally, they go down to a Repeater just like anyone. Damage over Time effects and such are of course useful to an extent, but the best way of fighting them is to recognize when you can prevent them from acting at all.

Well gently caress! Would have been great info!

Every time the beserker queen shows up I can guarantee week long wounds for just about everybody on the team. I could have turned up the damage by more than a little if I was taking advantage of free actions.

I got the archon ruler into a stun lock between two rangers going to town, plus some cryo grenades and the viper suit freeze grapple. Nearly murdered him on the first encounter.

The viper went down in a single execution shot so I have no idea how hard he's supposed to be.

So at minimum the first time you encounter them you should be ready since you get warned they are present at the alien facility. Assuming your playing WOTC my recommendation is a reaper to pre-emptively spot and also spread your soldiers WAY far apart once you know where they are. No, farther than that. Way farther.
