Now that we find ourselves, or will shortly find ourselves, quarantined to our lovely hovels for the foreseeable future, our corporate overlords have decreed that those of us who are able to continue to being exploited as wage slaves must do so in the interest of Number. This will likely be a new experience for the majority of goons! This is the thread to share your WFH experiences, questions, tips, ways to make it look like you're being productive while you're playing Doom Eternal, advice on how to be absolutely loving sure you're not screensharing before you open a porn tab, etc. As for myself, I have been working remotely for about 5 1/2 years now. Our entire computer touching team is distributed across multiple timezones and continents. By most metrics we've been successful, insofar as people seem to generally enjoy working here, our turnover is usually pretty low, and our company revenue has grown by an order of magnitude since I started. I am happy to answer whatever questions I can! Some general, broad tips:
Good luck out there. Wash your hands.

i might commandeer the monitor the company sent me home with for my personal computing and leave the TV as my animal crossing and movies device, i'm not sure yet. i don't know, i work in number so the last month has been the busiest it's ever been, i probably won't have a whole ton of time for dicking around

what's fun about my wife working from home is I finally have an idea of who the gently caress these people are that she tells me about when she gets home. and, yeah, I agree: Matt is a complete waste of time and he sucks. the other funny thing is how much this situation reveals about the higher ups and how much they can get away with. the COO of her company telecommutes from her house in Georgia because she was poached from Walmart and she doesn't want to move. they did a virtual all-hands meeting and they went to the COO who was sorta lounging in her living room talking into her laptop from the couch and it's painfully obvious that she doesn't even have a dedicated tele workspace and I guarantee she pulls in p deece six figgies. like even we have a dedicated home office and we are peons DR FRASIER KRANG has issued a correction as of 18:30 on Mar 19, 2020 |

Been working from home for a two weeks now because my company doesn't suck (for the most part) but it's the first day with my kids also here. They know the rules (if Daddy has his headphones in then he is on a call and you have to be quiet) and it's been pretty easy. I am wondering how this is going to change expectations around children in the workplace. My boss has his kids in the house and so do a few of our co-workers. Why cant this just be the norm and I can save a shitload on daycare.

Not 'teleworking' as my management keeps calling it yet, but we've been getting emails about it all week and filled out request forms for it. my entire section has chosen not to route our phones to another as we're public sector and this dont want our phones to be evidence in am information request. this'll rule, I predict this hitting sometime next week.

WFH loving rules if you're a computer toucher. i did like an hour of work max on any given day in the office and then had to dare the internet not to bore me for 7 hours at a clip. now i just turn on my laptop, set it on the couch next to me, and play video games all day. there's still only about an hour's worth of actual work to do, but it's way easier to amuse myself at this pace honestly i hope all of our jobs become permanent WFH even after corona is resolved (in a year or however long). after knowing this promised land, i can't go back to an office cube again

I've been electing to WFH since last Wednesday and my wife's company put everyone on WFH last Thursday to the end of the month. Definitely agree with everything outlined in the OP about preserving your usual work routines, having separate work spaces if you're co-habitating, etc. Even though my employer is considered an essential industry (they're in CA but I work in PA) my boss doesn't care where I work, and there's very little that I need to be doing right now; I have a daily check-in with another guy in my department at 9 AM each day but I was doing that pre-pandemic. Meanwhile it feels like my wife has non-stop phone meetings from 10-5 every day, I guess people really need their drug labels reviewed right away? This weekend we are finally going to move her desk into the guest room that she has been using as a makeshift office/storage locker for her start-up. E: Despite being WFH for a week+ and talking about having little to do, I've done maybe 30 minutes of gaming in that time. Feels wrong man! I am in a role where I spend ~50% of my day answering other developers' questions. I loving love working from home - I can answer questions over text with much less interruption to the other work I need to do. It saves me literally hours a day. Plus I have way more motivation to keep my apartment clean, cook my own food, and just generally reduces my stress. I've been pushing for a decent WFH policy for years at this place now, I hope our clearly improved output during this time changes some minds.

My workplace rolled out even more flexible WFH (Doesn't require a annoying approval process) this week due to Coronachan. I'm still going into to work since I'm not sure I would enjoy WFH.
