Apparently there was another RTS remaster that didn't get marketed well enough this past year but has good Steam reviews regardless: https://store.steampowered.com/app/944010/SWINE_HD_Remaster/

This new Steam "Deep Dive" thing is pretty good

Yeah I remember being hyped about this one. However the units being basically big head chess pieces put me off. There was an LP of the game here on SA however, and it was entertaining. Sadly my character, and archer got mauled to death by wolves fairly early on. :(

They actually released the original for free a loooooong time ago. I tried it, and it was pretty fun albeit fairly simple in terms of gameplay mechanics. One cool thing was that you could upgrade your units between battles and they would visually change wich was pretty cool for its time.

When your artist quits because you ask them to design a nice big "exterminate" button that you can press to liquify all those pesky minorities, maybe stop and think a little.

In good RTS remaster news, the EA staff doing the C&C and Red Alert remasters found a bunch of extra studio footage they're going to toss into the game as a bonus:

Not sure how I feel about how they're upscaling the old video, though.

Petroglyph did a good job with the 8-Bit series, but why would they remake RA1? It has already been done by the OpenRA people, so they're not adding anything. Is it just because EA wants to take a dump on the OpenRA developers so they're giving Petroglyph a bunch of money to do it for them?

I would go out on a limb and say they’re remaking games to sell them for money

Does OpenRA have the single player campaigns?

I believe it does, but there's also the fact that the OpenRA team have been in contact with Petro throughout this. In fact, I think they were even told of the remakes before anyone else.

Besides, OpenRA and the remake are two very different types of projects.

the idea needs to be nipped in the bud before it can catch on. when those FF7/9 upscale mods went around I was kinda uneasy at the idea but wasn't sure why; with this i'm getting terrible visions of a future where bored interns pass old assets through ML tools to feed an endless rolling wave of even more hollow remasters

getting a stomach ache just thinking about it.

It doesn't, but some the missions have been remade in the OpenRA engine so far. Thing is, because of how different OpenRA is from the main game in terms of unit balance, stats etc, the difficulty is all over the place. Not a faithful recreation at all, but that was never really the aim of OpenRA.

I picked it up, i've been finding it to be a really fun improvement on panzer corps 1- the leader abilities let you make some ridiculous units(2x ROF, ignores entrenchments and counterattacks tank) but it's pretty fun that way. One thing i'll say is that it doesn't have the air/naval focus of OOB, but other than that it's a really good take. I'm hoping to see if they implement a randomizer campaign because that seems like it could be quite fun(they already have random map scenarios).

While I think PC2 definitely makes mechanical improvements over its predecessors(it has encirclement as a thing, for example, and core slots aren't just a fixed quantity of units but it's a more flexible resource, AT guns now actually do something), it's a bit short on the scenario content- it just has the original style grand campaign and some various scenarios.

Playing with ridiculous poo poo like this is fun, though:

Is there a dedicated AOE2 thread? I played it a ton when i was a kid but in the "cheat for resources and send a byzantine deathstack" mode and now that i keep trying to actually play it correctly i'm really bad at economy management

Yeah, that's both me and my fault - I love AoE2 but i'm kind of self conscious about not being great at it. So I made a thread and a discord... but since I wasn't up for playing with humans all the time, we only really had one guy who was consistently interested in playing and it fell apart.

If you have Definitive Edition, try playing the Art of War campaign/missions which do a good job of teaching fundamentals on a higher level than "basic resource gathering". If you have one of the older games then the support is less directly integrated, but there's supposedly a bunch of mods out which have "training scenarios" which teach you how to manage an economy. There's a lot of video tutorials out there on youtube as well. I'm not as familiar with these, but I know ZeroEmpires did a few (although his series is nowhere near complete) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iybSSMUfbLs. Also Resonance 22 - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOZFzqxtvtxf2He2njHa8MvjbPGxqymS8

The definitive edition has done a really good job and the player base it's steadily growing, last week there was a tournament on twitch with 50k viewers, not bad for a 20 years old game.

There was an AoE2 thread in GBS a year or two ago that was pretty active for a while. We did Friday night games for a few months, basically until Summer came and it scattered. I'd be interested in doing regular games and could message the group that was playing (about a dozen or so).

e: Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is currently on sale for the first time since it was released. It's only 10% off, but it was only $20 to start with (and there should still be a discount if you already own the HD version). DE really was a big improvement. I tried HD again last week and I really missed all of the changes. Shift queuing is awesome.

Churchill was the major source of funds for early tank research during his WWI stint as High Lord of the Admiralty. He pushed for them to be named "landships," presumably so that he could be in charge of them. He was also instrumental in making sure tanks actually got made when he became the Minister of Munitions. Tanks would probably still exist without Churchill, but perhaps not before the end of WWI.

So yes, Churchill would get his own tank. And his own Infantry unit. Unfortunately he was talked out of learning naval aviation before WWI, on account of it being too drat dangerous.
