Was the album Jane’s Addiction actually popular? I had the impression they didn’t really break through until Nothing’s Shocking (which also had “Jane Says”).

Well, duh. And ya, Mike Love is a huge piece of poo poo. I remember when he and some other random non Brian Wilson Beach Boys member would show up on some crappy sitcom my sister was watching it would be treated like a HUGE deal. It was always some deep throating of them by someone who is supposed to be cool on the show to help the kids solve some kind of problem. It wasn't just Full House, i don't remember which it was but Mike Love was wearing one of those old school Big Dog shirts.

Ugh celebs appearing as themselves on 90s sitcoms, even the really good ones were really bad about it. They'd come on, everyone would fawn over them, then some non problem would be solved and there will be some joke about how the guest is great and the cast is dumb. The only episode I can think of that was actually decent was an Xmas episode Fresh Prince where of course all the rich celebs who also live in Belle Air come over, but the only one they made a big deal out was Evander Holifield, because i think Will wanted to fight him? There also was a way too kind Regan impression.

Were the Beach Boys in some way owned by Disney? I seem to remember the Beach Boys being featured on so many ABC (i.e. Disney) shows in the early 90's. They were, like, Wilson's cousins on Home Improvement, were on Full House with the Stamos/ Uncle Jesse thing, probably Rosanne at some point?

The Beach Boys showed up in Home Improvement but that was basically a huge joke reach saying their neighbor, Wilson, was related to Brian Wilson.

Also legendary on The Fresh Prince: there was a weird time when ABC was really pushing Boyz II Men, right after Cooleyhighharmony dropped. Like Stephanie had to dance to them on Full House at one point.
Anyway, they're on Fresh Prince and Will is shooting the poo poo with them being from Philly and he says "there were these guys, used to sing on the streetcorners, this skinny guy and this *real deep voiced* brother and this guy with..." and realizes he's shittalking them and kind of shuts up. It was kind of new watching a group let themselves be a punchline a bit.

"Ritual de lo Habitual" was the album my dad bought me in the early 90"s. It was pseudo popular at the time. It wasn't his style of music but he though I'd like it. He was right. That album was awesome.

At the time, "Jane Says" was on the radio pretty often. The live version with the kettle drums.

I was always impressed with my dad that he could tell it was something I would like. He was big into Mongolian music at the time after having tired of Zepplin and the Stones.

He liked "Been Caught Stealing."

No, but Mike Love will whore himself for any attention he can get.

The funnier thing was in the 1980s, when they were initially kicked out of doing a July 4th White House concert thing because one of Reagan's people thought they brought the wrong element. “We’re not going to encourage drug abuse and alcoholism, as was done in the past,” said James Watts. There were gasps. The Beach Boys? The All-American band? The ban was rescinded, they performed and Nancy Reagan apologized to them.

Except they did. Dennis Wilson was dead at the end of the year, drowning after drunkenly diving into the ocean. He had extensive drug issues. Brian wasn't with the band because he'd been kicked out for drug abuse (his captivity by Eugene Landy was then starting). Carl had had drug issues.

Dennis and Mike Love were first cousins. Dennis was also Mike's son-in-law. It's an insanely messed up family.

For a 1990s reference, this is Brian Wilson covering the Barenaked Ladies' Brian Wilson.

My hate for the song Kokomo came from hearing the soundtrack to the movie Cocktail in Grade 5 ('88, '89 school year). My teacher had a stereo in the back of the class and we could listen to music while we were doing school work. It was pretty dope actually because we could bring our own music in to listen to as well. I stole some of my brothers' tapes ranging from rap music, like young mc, tone loc, the various rap traxxxxx albums that had come out by that time etc... to some rock and/or roll, and pop and poo poo. Other kids brought in their poo poo too.

My teacher liked the Fine Young Cannibals. She had a bunch of her own poo poo too. The Phantom Of The Opera soundtrack got regular play. As did, unfortunately, the Cocktail soundtrack.

All we had when I was in fifth grade (‘90-‘91) was our teacher’s daughter’s old cassette of the Little Mermaid soundtrack. I heard that thing so many goddamn times that I recite to myself the lyrics to “Poor Unfortunate Soul” when my daughter watched the movie a couple weeks ago, despite not having heard it in nearly thirty years myself.

Kokomo would only be a lateral move, though, really.

Back in gym class, on a loving record player, we would run laps to two songs - Every Little Step You Take, and Vogue. I can still recite them both note for not, probably, since we ran laps pretty much every day to warm up for whatever.
