I found out recently that if you buy bulk rice that you won't go through very quickly, you'll want to freeze it for a day or two to kill the rice weevil eggs. Ask me about my daughter never eating rice again.

They fit in the standard size freezer in my apartment. If you empty out everything you should be able to fit a 20 pound bag easily. Maybe a 50 if you dont have an icemaker

Maybe because I'm only 32 but what I listen to is changing all the time, Spotify is always exposing me to new stuff. Probably helps being a part of a generation that grew up with all of these technological changes.

In the Iraq invasion in March 2003, were all of the 100K+ troops issued NBC suits? If not, are there rough estimates on how many were issued? Seems like DoD-grade PPE is the only stuff made in the US still

I'm eating a lot healthier thanks to COVID-19. Cooking almost all of my meals, not able to just go to a restaurant or a bar to relax or socialize and overeat. Maybe I should be a shut-in every March. Music talk: I like New Music Friday on NPR.

This last week at the Pentagon was living in a ghost town, Admittedly, I work from 0230 - 1100, but there was nobody wandering the halls. I felt really socially isolated and like it. Now...time for 9 days off work for self quarentine.

I've spent all my adult life hearing about how the internet etc is going to make remote working routine, and I see my friends working IT jobs forced to pay Boston, Seattle, SF rents etc because their jobs want them in a cubicle. Also this week I've seen more of the neighbors in my tiny woodsy neighborhood out walking or playing with their kids etc, than I have in an entire year and a half living here. Whole families out playing , having a walk, etc. Yeah, I hope this changes poo poo.

To be fair a lot of those people losing their minds are doing so over things like "How am I going to feed my children/pay the rent?" Edit: Also some are doing it because they can't buy four years' of toilet paper, so it's kind of a mixed bag.

Yeah, there seem to be three main groups of people at home now: - People who are hourly and nonessential so they are panicked over how to survive the next months. - People who are trying to figure out how to work 8 hours remotely while also watching their kids because the schools are shut down - People who are now essentially on paid vacations

This is totally a fair point, but imo just points with even more emphasis to our need for a functional societal safety net, the above need for a reorienting away from the pure pursuit of wealth and conspicuous consumption, blah blah blah. I'd say the greater good but I probably already sound like a Utopian socialist loon.

BigDave posted:My dad just bought some yeast to bake his own bread for the first time, and he's very seriousaly thinking about building a chicken coop and buying a few hens for fresh eggs. Chickens and ducks are extremely easy to take care of and can be beneficial for your yard garden. It's basically free protein to get a couple of heirloom breed birds and keep them in your yard. Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds are good heirloom breed chickens for egg production. Buckeyes are great if you want them foraging more than eating feed, but they won't lay quite as often. For ducks, I'd recommend Khaki Campbells for eggs. Once they're about 4-6 months old you'll get an egg 4-6 days a week from them, and duck eggs are better than chicken eggs. They're also pretty calm compared to most other duck breeds and just quietly mutter to themselves rather than loud honking mostly.

Cayugas are the best heirloom breed of duck though because they're all black, lay grey eggs sometimes, and nobody actually knows who bred them, they just kind of showed up. They're mid-size too so you can eat them in a pinch.
