Pillbug
Checking in from rural North Yorkshire

-hospitals are out of tests so they only give them if show up and it's critical.

Local GP surgery is telling people not to come in if they have any COVID-19 symptoms and to call the NHS hotline. For elderly and vulnerable people they are doing housecalls so they don't have to put themselves at risk going in. Mixed information on the extent of testing, earlier NHS were saying their capacity was 4'000 a day but were supposed to be ramping up to 25'000. What they are actually able to do, no idea.

-several pharmacies are closed because the staff was exposed.

Local village pharmacy is great. They are fully staffed (3 people including the owner). The pharmacist is also making hand sanitizer in the back room and giving it away for free to the over 70's and selling it low cost to locals.

-I haven't seen TP or paper towels on a shelf in a week

Supermarkets in the nearby large towns have been stripped bare of toilet paper. Village store is keeping packs in the backroom for locals/regulars to buy. Independent small grocery store in the nearby small town also has it.

-installed a bidet we had floating around for about 3 months, waters cold but can live with it.

I buy toilet paper in large batches, and bought like half a years worth just before it all kicked off so have plenty.

-grocery stores are a crapshoot if they have things like meat, bread or milk.

The supermarkets have been unpredictable. One day the milk will be stripped but there will be bread, then the next time you go in there will be no bread but plenty of milk. Pasta and tinned goods, no chance. Main reason for the shelves being stripped isn't people panic buying in the store anymore (when I've been in people seem to have been pretty reasonable) but the people ordering for home delivery as that stuff either never makes it onto the shelves or gets stripped by people fulfilling the orders before the store opens. Plenty of fish and fresh fruit / vegetables, no chicken, pork and beef pot-luck. However, for meat local butcher and farm shop have plenty and will deliver at home to people self-isolating.

Supermarkets in the UK have been designating specific times for vulnerable / elderly people / NHS workers to shop. From monday they are also prioritizing home delivery / click and collect for the over 70's and vulnerable people. The government also announced today a scheme where local councils will supply food parcels (free) to people who have been advised to self-isolate for 12 weeks.

-local government has basically shut down except for utilities

No problems at all. Internet is also fine, on BT Fibre noticed no dip in quality or speeds at all.

-the quarantine is a joke since every business that hasn't been ordered closed pretends everyone is essential.

Around here people seem to be taking it fairly seriously. Streets in the local village / town are empty and the Saturday market was cancelled. Around the small estate I live on people are walking on opposite sides of the street to keep social distancing.

-most sit down restaurants have given up trying to get by on take out and have closed, few have said they are closed for good.

Restaurants and pubs have all closed (not that there is that many restaurants), Government has promised support for effective business and have cut business rates to 0. Watch this space to see how effectively it gets rolled out. There isn't really a strong culture of food delivery here, and only the few Pizza / Indian / Chinese places do take out. Most of the food delivery apps don't even work here.

-police have said they will not respond to minor crimes (i.e. trespassing and minor theft).

Police have been busy enforcing the shutdown of pubs. A few of the locals had been ignoring it. Otherwise no difference noticed.

general comment

It sounds like the pressures on the system are a lot higher in the cities than out in the sparesely populated boonies where I live.

Onondaga County right? My relatives(husband and wife) who finally got their results back positive on Friday got served with those papers. They get daily calls to record their temperatures taken twice daily. They won't be able to leave until they both have negative test swabs in 1-2 weeks. They were lucky to have milder symptoms and had already been self isolating for 2 weeks.

I know this thread moves fast, but this article doesn't show any evidence that covid 19 causes digestive issues. It just states that, uncommonly, a few patients had diarrhea too. You can have diarrhea, for example, and a cold at the same time. Doesn't mean everyone who shits or farts should start panicking.

no they shouldn't, but COVID 19 absolutely causes digestive issues, as has been reported since the very beginning

as in... Study: Nearly half of COVID-19 patients experience digestive issues

quote:

Chinese researchers analyzed data from more than 200 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals in the Hubei province and found almost half said their main complaints were digestive symptoms.

The article I quoted stated that the most common digestive issue reported was lack of appetite. This one says diarrhea. So not only do we have two contradictory articles, but they're both possibly wrong as well. Wait for an official authority to comment directly.

The same one you quoted also stated that only 7% of patients did not report respiratory issues. The goon I was helping last night had no respiratory issues, so likely no need to panic.

If you have a fever and respiratory issues AND diarrhea, go get tested if possible.

If you only have the squirts, try not to sweat it.

Edit: If you do have all the symptoms, call a health provider for directions instead of running out and getting tested, thereby exposing others.

The articles may be presenting it differently but it's the same study.

15% of people had diarrhea, 1% vomiting and abdominal pain. The rest of the "gastrointestinal" issues are lack of appetite (40% of cases) which isn't what people are thinking about when they think gastro. There's also other issues with the study that make it doubtful it's a great sample of COVID-19 cases but even if you assume it's a great sample it doesn't say anything about lots of people having the shits.

Actually that Hill article is considerably worse than others quoting that study, since usually they include loss of appetite bundled together with the other symptoms but the Hill makes it sound like they're just talking about "diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain."

Well, I finally saw a co-worker (we work solo on the weekends and I was off Thurs/Fri/Sat) who explained why we can't work from home when literally every other person in the office is. I work as a dispatcher, and the IT guys can't figure out a way to get our inbound calls to forward to our laptops at home. They thought they had it figured out, but since we share desks (WHY), they can't find a way to get the hard phones to forward from one employee to another without someone logging those employees in/out on the physical phone. So now they're just going to have us spread out a little more and try not to cross-contaminate at shift change. I have three people in my department over the age of 55, two with children at home, and an elderly smoker who already had to have surgery last fall for smoking related reasons.

Also, that elderly smoker has apparently called in sick the last two days. No one knows what her symptoms are, but I mean, it can't be good. I'll give y'all live updates if I get the roni (I'm going to get the goddamn roni).

It cites research papers showing evidence of digestive symptoms, including descriptions for the mechanisms by which GI symptoms could occur. I know you're trying to be helpful but please don't make posts like this one, GI symptoms are common even though it's a respiratory disease (other respiratory illnesses cause GI issues, too)

No one should panic either way and everyone should just assume that they are a vector that can infect others
