In the software update sysprefs there's a link that says "Other updates are available." Click that and you'll get all your 10.14 patches.

Has anyone been able to successfully create a windows 10 boot USB on Catalina? I'm trying to do a fresh install on a Thinkpad and all I have is my MBP to create the disk. I used to use BootCamp to do this but it looks like that's not an option anymore as it just wants the ISO. Is my only bet here to spin up a VM and create it there?

Go to System Preferences > Software Update and instead of selecting the upgrade to Catalina, there should be a blurb saying additional updates are available. Click on the words More Info highlighted in blue in that window and an additional window pops up with those updates. Click 'Install Now' but only at this additional window. Only the listed updates will install, not Crapalina.

Quite literally if it ain't broke don't fix it. I heard enough horror stories last year to even want to bother with it. There's a 90% chance it will work flawlessly with all of my apps and my current workflow but there's also not really a reason for me to upgrade anyway. Mojave is pretty solid.

I like Mojave too, but Catalina does have a few features I'd like to use, and at this stage I'm not really seeing a specific reason not to upgrade beyond Catalina's enduring bad reputation.

For me it’s that I don’t have time to troubleshoot and no money to replace anything that I use for work that this breaks. And the shift away from iTunes, especially for audiobooks, just sucks for me and I don’t want to deal with it. Would love to use sidecar though.

Catalina's handling of audiobooks is astonishingly bad, and as far as I know it's not gotten any better since the initial release. I have a lot of audiobooks, and I can't think of any features that Catalina offers to make it worth it.

Catalina also follows iOS where your boot drive gets partitioned into one for the actual System and the other support files. It's a little nightmarish to follow and even worse to try to alter anything system related. All part of Apple's seemingly idiotic drive to hide everything from the user.

Yeah my 2013 rMBP is staying on Mojave until it's time to retire it. I have Office 2011 that works for what I need office for which I'd have to replace, as well as some scanner software. If it ain't broke don't fix it. 90% of MacOS updates seem to be so userland-software focused anyway, and I don't use Safari or most of their first party apps beyond like iTunes and Notes, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on much. Sidecar would be neat but I'm pretty sure I'd have to buy a new laptop to use it anyway. And an iPad!

Same. Got a 2013 rMBP. Might need to replace the battery on it as its down around 80% but it's chugging along just fine on Mojave. There's one piece of software that I use which is 32bit and won't be updated. I've read about changes with Catalina and none of them jump out as important. I'll get the 2021/22 14“ and move on then.

The UI seems so much more responsive now without dropped frames! I can't tell if this is removal of some apps (or lower level cruft) or Catalina itself. iTunes to Music isn't my *favorite* as it seems much less responsive but my music transferred without issue. Album art is lost for quite a bit of items though... bleh. I will miss Turbo Boost Switcher Pro as it makes my temps stay in control (as I disable the stupid turbo boost 99% of the time).

I find catalina (or maybe just safari 13) to be a little slower than mojave but not enough that I've given serious thought to trying to downgrade, and it may all be in my head anyway. I haven't actually encountered any of the myriad bugs everyone else has had (probably because I don't use the mail app).

Can that still be fixed? It's due to a really crappy anti-reflective coating that gets eaten away by finger oils and the keyboard pressing against it. Apple had a replacement program up to 4 years from manufacturing of the laptop. My 2012 is well out of that period. https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/17/apple-extends-free-staingate-repairs/ The Clorox wipes remove the anti-reflective coating completely. Re: Catalina talk Holy poo poo if you don't have a solid reason, just don't upgrade. Suddenly all the 32-bit apps you didn't think you missed will spring up. I am baffled as to what the benefit of removing 32-bit support is. I'm in the middle of shooting online videos for a class, but as soon as it clears, I'm going to hack my way back to Mojave and ride that out on this machine.

I'll probably wait until I get new hardware, but I'm still sour about having to give up Creative Suite and QuickTime Pro. (Fortunately, I'm not doing creative work right now, but I do think CC is a ripoff.)

Yup, and there are also 64-bit apps that have some 32-bit dependencies that will have complete modules not function properly. MacOS' 64-bit flag (in System Information) is not a clear indicator of Catalina compatibility.

Re: 64/32-bit talk, if you have something you really want to use then you can use virtualization to run an older version of macOS. As long as you have a reasonable amount of ram available that’s probably a better solution than running an ancient OS.
