I won't be getting involved in any meme wars if I can help it. As I mentioned the friend who gave me an intro game plays USA so I thought Germans would be a good thematic opposition force. I don't know much about WWII as I was a very uninterested student in my school days but now I'm a little more mature I would be interested to learn more about the period. What's a good place to start?

They decided to do something similar with WW2, starting in September of 1939, and their research is top notch. They tend to do highlight episodes of units, armaments, personae, nations and more. It's a work in progress (they're in 1941 currently) but I think you'll learn a lot.

What's a good place to start? WW2 is such a huge topic that it's impossible to recommend any one thing that covers all the bases. For a relatively brief overview I like Martin Gilbert's The Second World War: A Complete History, and then from there if you want more you can find recs on any given topic.

I honestly listen to youtube documentaries on my commute and soak up info that way, rather than read books (that's for Napoleonics). There's a youtuber called TIK who makes pretty good tactical level content (ie. "a very detailed look at Stalingrad" etc) that I find good. Keep in mind he has a negative amount of knowledge about politics, and thus has painted himself in a corner where he mixes his good content with extremely butthurt videos about hos Hitler was a socialist because PARTS OF THE GERMAN STATE WAS INVOLVED IN THE ECONOMY! And any country where the state in any way regulate the economy is a socialist state. AND THE WORD SOCIALIST IS RIGHT THERE IN "NSDAP", I mean C'MON WAKE UP SHEEPLE! THEY PAID TAXES WHICH IS BASICALLY COMMUNISM! But there are plenty of nuggets of gold in that shitheap, I promise. https://www.youtube.com/user/TheImperatorKnight A better youtube for WW2 content is Military History Visualized, he has tons of good content on both strategic and tactical level. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK09g6gYGMvU-0x1VCF1hgA The Tank Museum has great walk-arounds of famous tanks, often led by David Fletcher: a very sweet old man with an enormous mustasche, timid manners and a deep love of tanks. He's the milhist goon we all hope to end up as one day: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheTankMuseum Military Aviation History has pretty much everything you'd ever need to know about the aviations side, kind of mixed with let's plays of realistic flightsims. https://www.youtube.com/user/Bis18marck70

Yeah, I tend to avoid TIK's stuff about the powers/leadership in general, but his various battlefield series are top-notch. He really lays out the tactical situations well, and does a good job of consulting multiple sources to try to figure out what was actually happening. There's a lot of "...but this is likely just Nazi propaganda" and "...which is a great example of post-war scape-goating" when discussing various accounts. A lot of the memoirs and "first-hand" accounts were written after the war by guys trying to avoid being painted as war criminals, so cross-checking and taking things with a grain of salt is important. This is especially true of the war on the Eastern Front.

It made two things about him abundantly clear: The first is that he is the type of person who has an extremely hard time admitting error or changing his mind when he is shown to be completely, utterly, and factually wrong. The second is that he completely lacks self awareness of his own biases and preconceived notions, and thus cannot attempt to correct for them. Those aren't fantastic features in a documentarian. Oh and he made a really long video about Mussolini and it was uncomfortably positive of him. Geisladisk fucked around with this message at 19:32 on Mar 19, 2020 |

In light of this talk about other YT channels, I should mention that Indy Neidell and the team behind The Great War and World War 2 have a very clear position on warfare in general and aren't afraid to show it. The Great War episodes are rife with Indy mentioning that tens of thousands of people died that week and what a fuckin' senseless tragedy it all was.

I got some more entrenchments from Ironclad Miniatures. Recently I finished two of them with contrast paints, but the rough surface made it difficult for the paint to flow into all the little crevices. Any idea how to improve the flow of the paint? I don't have any flow improver. Anything else that will help? Varnish? Dish soap? The first two completed:

A tiny bit of dish soap should help break water tension. I know scale modelers often use window cleaner as well as a cheaper alternative for flow improver.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone watch any of his videos. The ones that seem insightful are just him regurgitating the assessments of actual historians and not his own work. Anything that is his own work is ludicrously poorly understood, especially his understanding of economics. I remember once he tried to own someone in the comments with a giant quote from Tooze’s book ‘Wages of Destruction’ that TIK thought meant he was proving the Nazis were socialists, but if you read literally any of the book surrounding that quote it’s obvious that Tooze is saying they sold a fake version of socialist policy to people to justify their autarky converting most of the nation’s economy for war. TIK has an astonishing ability to misinterpret the work of much more accomplished and insightful people.

Lot's of people were disappointed that their naval set was for the tiny boats, not the big ships that seems to be more popular among scale modelers etc. Only deal is that you need to make ranges very abstract, or you'd need at least a tennis court to fight a battle.

My order for two tanks from Warlord hasn't shipped in the last two weeks since placing the order, and now they're all on lockdown in the UK....I'm never gonna get them, aren't I? (Oh well, I suppose they are Italian tanks, so it's not like they would've done me much good anyway, right? ) EDIT: OK nevermind, I actually got it in the mail just then...they simply sent it to me without any notifications, unlike all my other orders from them. Thanks for responding so quickly to my post here, Warlord! Once I'm no longer essential at work, I'll happily smash out these soldiers and tanks!
