My mindset is that Boris probably isn't dying from this, but at very least he's going to be phenomenally miserable and in pain for at least a week and that gives me joy.

Anyway I got an email today saying Mcdonalds aren't going to be cunts and are going to furlough their workers with 80% of their average weekly pay. So contract people like me still likely get at least our full contract pay (since we almost all work more than those contracted hours) and zero hours people don't get boned. So yay I can stop stressing about that now.

Yea the chance of Boris dying from this are minimal, all we can hope is that that it's enough of a blow he still takes the virus seriously. Still, you can degrade rapidly with corona so even if he's mild now might not remain so.

Just been into town and it was pretty deserted the people that were there were pretty good trying to stand 2 meters apart where possible. Only black spot was one prick that after finishing a phone call decided to push in between me and the guy in front of me in the line to get into Iceland. Police didn't help much, I don't know what level of English the guy had but he seemed to mostly ignore them and they eventually told me to move back and let him push in. However, the Boris news has cheered me up immensely.

A dunce's guide to the collapse of the republic: The Patrician classes replaced the entire working class with slaves, and bought up all agricultural land, driving all the poor into the cities, where there were still no jobs. This empowered populist opportunists like Caesar, who mobilised the hungry poor with promises of cash, food, and land redistribution, and used that popular support to overthrow the Republic.

Like, yeah, they had a grain dole in Rome, but that was a last ditch effort to stop the Plebs from ripping the Patricians limb from limb because there were no loving jobs, and there were no jobs because the Patricians had so many slaves they didn't need to pay workers anymore. The dole didn't destroy the Republic, Patricians did.

The Republic was poo poo anyway.

Yeah there's nothing to give even someone incapable of empathy a dose of reality like living through the thing you were saying is no big deal two weeks ago.

Nah plebs had to work all day every day, the grain dole wasn't that good. This is an outdated view, I think.

Setting aside the ethics of rejoicing in his death, from a purely tactical point of view it would be catastrophic for the left if Johnson did die from this. He'd hit instant martyrdom, for elections to come his ghost would be carted out to remind people the time 'the tories died for this country', they'd probably try and get statues of him erected.

Maybe. But I think there's a different route where he's remembered as an incompetent idiot whose hubris got himself and thousands of his countrymen killed in the same way.

In America we had a President named William Henry Harrison; he only had the office for 31 days before he died of pneumonia. It's widely believed that he got sick after delivering a two-hour speech in the rain without a coat, hat, or umbrella. He's remembered as a funny idiot, as the butt of jokes about his poor planning and pathetic presidency. Maybe that's how BoJo will go down.

Basically the Roman upper class considered the plebs to be a bunch of welfare queens, and they wrote about them like that, but they were wrong. The grain dole was like a list of people too, not universal.

I mean, I don't assume the Plebs were literally laying around all day eating their free bread - of course they were working, but I thought there was a general acceptance that the social condition of the Plebeians worsened significantly due to the massive increase in slave labour as the Republic expanded. But tbf I haven't read any new work on Roman history in a few years now, so I'm not exactly on the cutting edge.

In fact it starts mild for basically everyone, that’s one of the awful things about it. I think the turn for the worse is normally about a week after the first symptoms?

Maybe not empathy, but it would at least introduce him to the idea of reality.

Austerity was what it was because everyone at the top knew they would be insulated from it or even profit from it, I think there's been a bunch of people looking at Covid the same way, and some proportion might stop once they actually get it and realize that viruses care little for your formal titles.

Maybe, though personally I think that the effect of the structure of tories (and british society in general) is to make sure that the people with the platforms and the power are whittled out from the most sociopathic of an already sociopathic lot.

Two world wars (and one world cup) and modern liberalism has shifted that a bit though. You no longer have the "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, there's nothing more shameful than a 40 year old lancer" attitude, it's been replaced with "some people may die but please god not me no" and the upper classes getting a dose of something that doesn't much care for your station, plus the middle classes getting a taste of what the benefits system looks like, might shake some reality into some percent of them. A liberal is a socialist who has never had to rely on the state and all that.

Not all of them by any means, some will get it, recover, and learn nothing other than "well I recovered, so the ones that died must have been doing something wrong", but I'll hold out hope that some learn a lesson.
