Guavanaut posted:Two world wars (and one world cup) and modern liberalism has shifted that a bit though. You no longer have the "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, there's nothing more shameful than a 40 year old lancer" attitude, it's been replaced with "some people may die but please god not me no" and the upper classes getting a dose of something that doesn't much care for your station, plus the middle classes getting a taste of what the benefits system looks like, might shake some reality into some percent of them. A liberal is a socialist who has never had to rely on the state and all that. This is what I am hoping for also. Silver linings and all that. But then, never overestimate the British public's capacity for empathy and understanding.

So boris johnson got elected in December and by April has massively expanded the role of the state in public and economic life and possibly killed the Tory leader? I feel like even a victory for Jeremy 'gulags' Corbyn wouldn't have achieved these outcomes quite so quickly

Ahaha, loving App Hancock too. Watch them magically find tests for the entire parliament next. It'll be 50+ MPs by the end of the day. (Waiting on the Jess Flaps / Rees Mogg combo)

communism bitch posted:I mean, I don't assume the Plebs were literally laying around all day eating their free bread - of course they were working, but I thought there was a general acceptance that the social condition of the Plebeians worsened significantly due to the massive increase in slave labour as the Republic expanded. But tbf I haven't read any new work on Roman history in a few years now, so I'm not exactly on the cutting edge. Imagine someone from the future trying to figure out how Universal Credit works, but all their sources are old rich ukippers who say it's a program where we import terrorists and then give them free houses and thousands of pounds per week. There's a lot of that going on with the people who were writing about the plebs. Also a lot of historians have tried to assert that this one weird trick is why Rome fell, but they had massive barbarian invasions, a plague, labour shortages, an insane amount of backstabbing over the throne instead of actual rulership, and lots of other stuff going on. It also happened over quite a long period of time, someone in the time period might have never noticed Rome "fell". I don't know poo poo though, I just think Rome is cool and this is half remembered stuff I've read about how old history was wrong. Kinda like how the Pyramids might not have been made by slaves after all, and it was paid labourers working in the agricultural off-season. In all seriousness though, is this a safe 2 meter seperation for social distancing?!? I mean, that looks like a solid three meters between opposing sides to me, and you can always pick up the mace to hold back the infected.
