As far as other great museums, Camden, NJ has the USS New Jersey, the biggest of the Iowa-class battleships docked there, and it was a fantastic little day trip.

Benefit of having a son who was a Cub Scout: I got to sleep overnight on the New Jersey. Cramped and hot but fun

If you go to Dresden you can see the oldest submarine in existence, and as you might guess of early submarines it is hilariously unsafe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandtaucher

quote:

The model was demonstrated in Kiel harbour in front of naval dignitaries. Its satisfactory performance led to the construction of a full-scale model, which was funded by contributions from army personnel and local civilians. Due to the inadequate funding, the scale of the boat had to be downgraded and the design altered and simplified; resulting in a reduced diving depth from 30 m to 9.5 m. This redesign included eliminating the use of enclosed ballast tanks to contain the water being taken into and expelled from the submarine. Instead, the water was allowed to pool inside the bottom of the hull, below the main floor, and was able to move relatively unobstructed within this area when the ship changed orientation. The resulting instability was probably a significant contributing factor to the loss of the vessel.

On 1 February 1851, Brandtaucher sank after a diving accident during acceptance trials in Kiel Harbour. The submarine experienced equipment failure, and sank to the bottom of a 60-foot hole at the bottom of Kiel Harbour. Bauer escaped by letting in water, thus increasing the air pressure, which allowed Bauer and his two companions to open the hatch and swim to the surface. This was the first submarine escape to be witnessed and reported.

If you find yourself in Mobile, AL (God forbid) you should check out the USS Alabama. It's a WW2 battleship and it's really interesting to go through. They also have a WW2 era submarine which is claustrophobic as hell, and a few planes.

There was nothing else worth doing on a Sunday in that armpit, I'm glad it was there.

Smithsonian had Enterprise before the flyable shuttles were retired, they traded it in for a real one. I doubt there's any obstacle other than money preventing it from being displayed better.

Coronavirus in F1: Red Bull's Helmut Marko told team's drivers to become infected

quote:

Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko said he advised his drivers to become infected with coronavirus while the season is in hiatus.

The 76-year-old said he had the idea to bring his Formula 1 drivers and juniors together in a camp, which "would be the ideal time for the infection to come". "They are all strong young men in good health. That way they would be prepared whenever the action starts," he said.

The Austrian was speaking in an interview with his country’s television channel ORF, in which he added: "We have four Formula 1 drivers and eight or 10 juniors, and the idea was that we would organise a camp to mentally and physically bridge the dead time.”

The camp, he said, would have been organised to ensure the drivers were in the best possible physical shape once the season starts again. Marko said: "If there is a racing season with 15 to 18 races, it will be very, very tough. There is no possibility to improve your fitness during the season. So it's actually ideal to use this time now."

The rest of Red Bull management were against the idea, which was abandoned.

"Let's put it this way: it has not been well received," Marko said.
