Lots of shows can be skewed towards unfunny with the laugh track removed largely because of the dead air added specifically for laugh tracks. Some shows like Nerd Does Funny Thing and FRIENDS are crap regardless.

e: spelling is hard

I'm not a fan of the type of humor and jokes in Friends, but the show still works without a laugh track.

Frasier is amazing without a laugh track because David Hyde Pierce is an amazing actor and the show rides on his performance so much.

Unfortunately the only clips I can find are oddball scenes that don't really hold up well even with the laugh track (Niles dating a call girl and Niles having a mental breakdown, the entire show is filled with better jokes idk why they picked those two out of all of them) and add "spoopy" music. Sucks.

Sorry I haven't been paying attention to usernames, do you like friends or not, what am I supposed to fight you over, the idea that friends is in no way good and it doesn't work on any level and how dare you appreciate that, funny or not the scenes work without a laugh track, or the idea that friends is so good even if you don't like it's style of humor whatsoever, and find it bland and crass, you should like it anyway and find it funny.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated thanks

I remember enjoying Friends when I was like, 12, watching reruns with my much older sister who grew up with it. I think it's just a product of a specific Zeitgeist and time, and if you're outside that it doesn't kind of, click for you. Likewise, none of the scenes I have seen of Seinfeld have been particularly funny to me.

But then I wonder if I hadn't grown up with Frasier on the TV every morning, if I would still like it, I think I'd find it too slapstick to enjoy. There are a lot of subtle elements in the performances that you need to be acquainted with the characters for, and they probably don't work otherwise.

This has been a commercial break, brought to you by "Random TV musings", and now back to your program:

Simply that the show doesn't work without a laugh track. The show is 50% dead air reserved for laugh tracks. Nothing past that. Hope this helps!

He's so charming you nearly forget that his main plot for the first seven years of the show is him wanting to cheat on his wife with a woman at least 10 years his junior, that works for his family and relies on that job for her visa.

I was chased by a huntsman in Belize. It was trapped in a garbage bin, and I overturned it to let the poor guy out. It crawled out then sat in the middle of the footpath, and my coworker and I were worried it would get stepped on, so she poked it and it ran at me to hide under my sandal/in my toes and I was like "Okay I respect you and care about you but not enough to have contact with you" so I started backing away and it kept coming so I had to run to avoid it. It eventually made it's way into the bushes.

woof.

Sexual assault and racism were pretty heavily routine in the first three.

Even in the early seasons, it was massively toned down from the original book and (I think) film. There, "Trapper" John was accused of being a literal rapist, "trapping" a woman in a train car to "convince" her to sleep with him - hence his nickname.

The show's in a different continuity, and this incident is never mentioned there (as far as I recall), so you can argue that his nickname in the show had a different origin. I'm pretty sure that's a reason why they shuffled him off the show when they did, similar to the probable reason they axed Spearchucker.

I can understand some exec not wanting that repeated over and over, but on the show he was just the fourth guy in the swamp and completely respected as an equal and friend by Hawkeye (so well above Frank). The nickname always struck my as both obviously and highly ironic (for a doctor), but it's true that ironic racism is just racism so it's good that it ended.

Even when Spearchucker was on the show, he didn't really fit int the Hawkeye-Trapper-Burns dynamic that was a cornerstone of the show's early humor, and his position didn't really allow him to play into the Radar-Henry or Henry-Klinger joke groups either. That leaves the only real place he could have been made to fit was in the romantic (or "romantic" sublots with the nurses - and that would not have gone over well in that era given that most of the nurses were white.

This means that he didn't contribute nearly enough value to the show to compensate for the awful name.

Niles is two years older than Daphne, he leaves Maris in season 3, and Daphne works for an agency, not directly for the Cranes, and is repeatedly shown to be able to walk out and find a new job at a moment's notice. (It's weird to think "it's a product of its time" about something that was better back then.)
