We aren't small exactly, have somewhere in the 200-250 client range, but I work on billable hours and I am already seeing a lull in work.

We also have clients that have already cancelled work and I've heard a few that had to lay people off already.

I don't care how many people I probably infected with COVID-19 while refusing to wear a mask, my comfort is far more important than the health and safety of everyone around me!

I've only been here two months and I'm a newly added position as of this year, so I'm waiting to get laid off as well.

On the bright side we are a hospital so maybe I won't, but our numbers are way down because of Corona. Should get a poo poo ton of 'in case of next time' projects when it's over, though.

I had been talking to recruiters and interviewing over the last month. One of the places I interviewed with emailed me last week to say they would be sending me an offer in the next 2-3 weeks.

Even if they follow through and make an offer, I’m super afraid to take it, even if it’s amazing, just because my current company is pretty stable and I don’t want to be low man on the totem poll at a new place in this environment.

This is basically what we've been instructed to do for now until we can drum up some business. I'm doing some Palo Alto stuff because we support quite a few of the firewalls and I'm not the strongest on that particular platform, and I pickd up some time at Pentest Academy because it was on a crazy good sale and there are a few things I need to shore up on before I start going after the OSCE.

On the plus side of working for a small consultant company is everyone here are actual people and they've basically told us that they will continue to keep us all employed through this until there isn't enough money in the coffers to do payroll.

That's confusing because there's a lot of work that just isn't going ahead. So either they are onshoring a lot of roles that have disappeared in the past couple of weeks or something weird is going on.

Thins are slow so I did a thing. Inspired by another's effort, I decided to create my own latency heat map for AWS regions:

What I didn't realize is how the latency between regions remains eerily rock steady over time. I would have expected at least a little variance during peak or off-peak times.

I am looking to hire a patching and provisioning engineer. This basically a brand new position (we had someone who did this years ago, lots of turmoil and I am rebuilding my group from almost scratch). I want to make sure I am tailoring the position correctly and not mixing roles too much.

Background:

We are a smallish liberal arts university. My group (Infrastructure) has a technical manager who ran the ship by himself during the dark times (me) and a windows engineer. Due to a lot of things, we really need an engineer who is completely handling patching of our endpoints and servers so myself and the other engineer can focus on projects. Most of our things are Windows, so starting out, I want someone who has SCCM and group policy experience. Intune / WSUS + anything else can be taught, but those are the basics I want to bring someone in for.

I am also trying to start operational assessments of systems individuals are responsible for. In this context I mean: how well does this system run? What stage is it in "everything manual" to "fully automated". And it should be a progression. That way I can measure poo poo that my team can actually control, not some poo poo rear end metrics that make the numbers go up.

So this position would start out with SCCM administration, reporting on endpoints, assisting in making plans for remediation of patches etc. And then work back into maintaining the image that we use for endpoints (mostly not a huge thing, because the idea is that intune / sccm / group policy would already be handling the configuration aspect so it would be low stakes base image with drivers for our Dell fleet which we have an appliance that handles most of it). Then, ensuring that it isn't too much load, working into JAMF as well. We don’t do very much with it, but similarly, just baseline reporting on configuration and managing those systems we have.

I need a reality check but does this job description make sense:

Job Description posted:

This is a system administration role that will work to ensure University endpoints are provisioned with the University approved baseline configuration image, kept up to date with patches from the OS vendor, and third party software vendors. The Engineer will also assist in keeping systems within baseline using automated configuration management tools (Windows SCCM, Microsoft 365 intune, JAMF, group policy etc.) and reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Using Configuration Management tools to manage endpoint (workstation and server) configuration and patch management.
· Administering and updating Configuration Management tools to ensure they are patched and interoperable with newer technologies.
· Designing and planning new systems for Configuration Management
· Implementing new systems for Configuration Management
· Build and maintain endpoint baseline image(s) to deploy to new endpoints
· Reporting on endpoint status, patch management and other requested items.
· Package applications to be delivered to endpoints either automatically or through self-service portals.
· Operationally assess systems under job responsibilities and derive improvement plans based on outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to administer configuration management systems (SCCM, Microsoft Endpoint Manager, InTune, JAMF Pro, etc).
2. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to package applications and configuration policies to be deployed in an enterprise environment.
3. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and work both independently and as a team member.
4. Experience with reporting technologies in configuration management systems.
5. Experience with scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Bash, etc.)
6. Demonstrated ability to generate and adapt equipment and technology to serve user requirements.
7. Ability to perform site surveys and identify requirements necessary for system definition and utilization.
8. Ability to perform research, analyze results, draft requirements, and formulate technology solutions.
9. Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical matters, both verbally and in writing, to end users who have varied levels of understanding of subject matters.
10. Experience performing software upgrades to existing systems.
11. Experience providing technical assistance to developers and other IT personnel to facilitate utilization/maintenance of new and existing systems.
12. Experience and demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems (server and workstation) in order to configure systems for business and security requirements.
13. High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience in the coordination and delivery of computing services and technology in an academic environment.
2. Experience with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)
3. Experience with JAMF
4. Experience with Microsoft InTune and Office 365 Integration.
5. Experience with git as a version control system.
6. Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or discipline related to the knowledge skills and abilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience that meets the minimum qualifications, as outlined.

To your first points, I do not disagree. We have a contractor currently working on this, that I would like to apply for the position. Has the demeanor to work through those issues. Not saying this person would get it, just looking at the kind of applicants we tend to get, I think this person would get an interview at least. We have been toying with Infra as Code, but we aren't anywhere near being ready yet. Whatever the position, I think that the person we get in would really flesh it out. Lots of green field here to take care of and almost none of it is staked out. Because of some stuff I can't go into we are not allowed to use Azure as this time: :what:

There is a massive divide between people who are taking the situation right now as serious and people who are just ignoring it and thinking its overblown.

And that's precisely why we are going to have to remain in lockdown for another month.

Anyone using Azure Windows Virtual Desktop? Starting to deploy it. I'm surprised it went into GA in Sept of 2019 and they are only expecting it to have a management blade in Azure portal in Q3 of 2020. I mean, I guess I shouldn't be, but I am. Still excited to use it.

I can talk about this some.

We're in New York, and we've been 90% WfH for about three weeks now. We swung hard to Windows Virtual Desktop because we realized there was no way we could get the ~500 laptops we would need in time. We're an essential business, but the majority of our people are back-of-house.

The management is weak right now. Practically non-existent if you aren't extremely comfortable in PowerShell. It is utterly mind-boggling the lack of in-browser management options available.

That said, the PowerShell module is full-featured and effective.

There's also a Microsoft-provided Azure WebApp you can deploy for a GUI management. It's not perfect and it's not native, but it does offer a functional GUI interface for when you don't want to break out the blue & white..

A couple of other points:

No, you really can't assign a group to a pool. Users only.
Besides WVD pooling, you'll want FSLogix (for profile roaming) and MSIX (for app roaming).
AADDS will help keep things clean too. Normal Azure AD isn't enough, they need full Domain Services one way or the other.
If you haven't already done so, you can use Conditional Access policies to add multi-factor authentication to logging in to the web front-end. Use this to get a toe-hold on MFA in the rest of the environment.

Good luck!

I think that’s a pretty detailed enough list of requirements that describe the position well. I’d maybe put JAMF, Intune, etc. in a optional skills section? Trying to find someone with SCCM, JAMF and Intune experience is going to be a tough find and I wouldn’t want discourage potential candidates from applying.

I feel any half decent SCCM engineer could easily ramp-up on Intune and JAMF. Lastly, I’d just say for education requirements that a four year degree, technical degree or equivalent practical experience is sufficient.

Matches up with my reading and what I was planning. A lot of my career has been Citrix/VDI, and it all seems fairly straight-forward. I actually wanted to push WVD hard when I saw this coming, especially considering we were already planning on migrating away from our terrible ~cloud~ VMware Horizon environment, but was then put on some other nonsense project instead. I don't mind the PowerShell bits, but it would be nice to have some sort of management interface for others to interact with, so I was planning on deploying the Azure WebApp.

This is definitely time to go all out on personal projects. I'm standing up a GitLab server which will be useful in its own right, and also good experience with modern web apps on Linux. I've got LDAP integration working, SMTP configured but not working, and just put in a request with Identity Management for an SSL key. This has also given me a much greater appreciation for the KACE appliance I manage, on that I just press buttons and things like server upgrades happen. On GitLab I'm back to editing configuration files in vim. it's fun, and good experience, but it's also nice to see that the web "appliance" we bought actually works an an appliance - it just does stuff.
