My assumption is that those books don't sell well even on their own and they can't cash in on the novelty of racebending a character in a classic book that already has a caché among white folks (who are their actual target audience with this poo poo, I'm sure.) Classics like Moby-Dick are consistent sellers and are already well known. Other classics like Native Son are also well known but already feature black people, so how are we gonna sell that?

one of australia's big 4 banks, ANZ, have come out with their yearly pre-mardi gras pinkwashing campaign under the hashtag #LoveSpeech. part of it is a 57 second long video of young lgbtqi+ people saying slurs they've been called in their lives to a camera lmao e: incredible, another part of it is the "hurt blocker" which is just a cutesy browser extension that replaces slurs with "celebratory emojis such as rainbows, unicorns and hearts" the same slurs you can go listen to in their video quite stretched out has issued a correction as of 06:58 on Feb 21, 2020 |

Off the top of my head, I personally enjoyed: 1984, Things Fall Apart, Heart of Darkness, The Poisonwood Bible, The Great Gatsby, Shakespeare (Othello, Hamlet, Julius Caesar), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Motherless Brooklyn, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, plus non-fiction, like Peoples History of the United States. Can’t imagine going through four years of school and only enjoying one assigned reading :-/

Catch-22 is the true dystopian novel, because it doesn't make the dystopia into an other. It places it right in the heart of the Allied forces.
